NBA Sunday: Free Agent Market Drying Up

The marquee players in this year?s free agency class have all inked new deals and most of the second-tier level guys have also received fresh contracts. So while there are still quite a few quality players remaining on the market, most teams have used much of their available cap space early in the process.

BrandonJennings_InsideOnly2Here is an update on some of the guys remaining on the market as it stands today:

Brandon Jennings ? Point Guard
2012-13 Team:
Milwaukee Bucks
Status:
Restricted Free Agent

The market for Jennings has seemingly dried up.

The Bucks can match any offer received ?for his services but the team has been trying its hand at bringing another floor general into town for the upcoming season, which has left Jennings out in the cold.

Milwaukee attempted to sign guard Jeff Teague but after the Atlanta Hawks matched the offer sheet, the Bucks turned their attention to some of the remaining point guard remaining on the market.

Jennings was rumored to be seeking a deal in the $12 million per year range at the start of free agency. While the Bucks haven?t ruled out the possibility of bringing Jennings back into the fold, the franchise seems intent on not bidding against themselves in the process.

Mike Miller ? Small Forward
2012-13 Team:
Miami HEAT
Status:
Unrestricted Free Agent

The combination of age and injury has taken its toll on Miller over the years and the veteran is clearly no longer the dynamic player he was during his prime. But Miller remains the consummate pro and a player who has? thrived under the bright lights of the postseason.

Miller was a victim of the amnesty provision, which cut his time in Miami short, but his long range shooting and big game production has playoff bound teams such as Denver, Houston, Memphis and Oklahoma City aggressively pursuing him.

Gerald Henderson ? Shooting Guard
2012-13 Team:
Charlotte Bobcats
Status:
Restricted Free Agent

The tone around the Bobcats would suggest the team is looking to bring back Henderson, but the franchise is also adamant they won?t bid against themselves in the process. Charlotte has the right to match any offer for Henderson?s services and prefers for the market to set his value.

Henderson is reportedly seeking a deal in the $8 million per year range, similar to what O.J. Mayo received from Milwaukee this season. The two sides were reportedly far apart in negotiations earlier this month and potentially seeking a sign-and-trade scenario.

Nikola Pekovic ? Center
2012-13 Team:
Minnesota Timberwolves
Status:
Restricted Free Agent

Minnesota team officials will meet with Pekovic?s representatives in the next week to try to hammer out a new deal. The Timberwolves can match any offer received for Pekovic?s services and there really isn?t a scenario on the table where the club wouldn?t do so to bring the big man back into the fold.

Pekovic is reported to be seeking a deal in the $55 million range, while the T?Wolves are rumored to offer the center a four-year $50 million contract. Based on this, the sides appear to be extremely close and it just seems like a matter of time before a new contract is inked.

Nate Robinson ? Guard
2012-13 Team:
Chicago Bulls
Status:
Unrestricted Free Agent

Robinson played huge for Chicago last season for a team missing injured All-Star guard Derrick Rose. Robinson averaged 13 points and over four assists per contest this past season, and is looking to cash in with? lucrative multi-year deal.

According to reports, Denver, New York, Milwaukee, Washington and Dallas all expressed at least a preliminary interest in the veteran guard at some point this summer.

Robinson is looking for a multi-year deal and this requirement has kept some teams at bay who are only interested in investing a one-year offer at the moment.

Lamar Odom ? Forward
2012-13 Team:
Los Angeles Clippers
Status:
Unrestricted Free Agent

While Odom is no longer a starting-caliber big man as he was during his prime, the veteran settled into becoming a solid frontcourt reserve with the Los Angeles Clippers last season.

The Clippers are rumored to be looking into bringing the veteran back for another season, while the Lakers? name has also surfaced in the past few weeks.

Kevin Martin Opens Up On Decision To Join Minnesota

One area where guard Kevin Martin has never struggled throughout his nine-year career is producing a high quantity of buckets. The veteran has a career scoring average of 17.8 points and he is rapidly approaching 10,000 career points.

But one area where the success hasn?t come consistently is being part of winning teams.

Martin entered the summer as a highly sought after free agent after spending last season with Oklahoma City playing alongside All-Stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

The experience playing with the game?s elite made Martin?s decision easier when it came to free agency and potentially playing with Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio in Minnesota.

?After playing with Kevin Durant and Russell [Westbrook], I wasn?t going to another team without a superstar,? Martin recently told the Associated Press. ?It just elevates your game and makes your life a lot easier.

?Last year I played as a third guy behind Kevin and Russ, which I loved because I feel like I got a year off from taking on that type of game. Now I feel like I?m ready to go back to that [starting] role where I can pick up a little bit more on the offensive end. Right now I feel great and I?m excited to get back into the system and I?m excited to play with such a good team and help get them back to the playoffs.?

The Timberwolves haven?t reached the playoffs since the 2004 campaign and have finished below .500 in every season since 2005.
