The world of 14-inch laptops has largely collapsed under the collective weight of ultrabooks, which over the last year have come to dominate the midrange segment these jack-of-most-trades systems once ruled. But Alienware has apparently not gotten the memo about that. Its latest revamp of its gaming laptop of that size, the M14x R2 , doesn't pretend it's a perilously thin ultraportable with unbelievable battery life and almost instantaneous speed. It's content with being a gaming laptop for those who don't want to break their backs, their budgets, or their backpacks when lugging it around, and that's a goal it meets handily, if not consistently.

Design
Alienware is noted throughout the industry for the design of its systems, and the M14x certainly lives up to the company?s established aesthetic. It looks distinctive before you even open the lid, which is jet-black in color and emblazoned only with two angled ridges along the center and the traditional chrome alien head with accents that glow a ghostly white as soon as you hit the power switch.

When it's powered on, the laptop displays another one of its gamer-friendly features: blue backlighting, enhancing the visibility of all they keys on the keyboard and the multitouch touch pad when the system is being used in a darkened room. (If you don't like the blue, you can change it; see the "Features" section below.) The keys type well enough, and the rubberized touchpad offers a bit more friction than many others, so the chances are small that your fingers will slide where you don?t want them go. The touchpad?s plastic buttons are quiet and press well.

The glossy 14-inch display on the M14x is an attractive one, with a fairly high 1,600-by-900 resolution. This is enough for watching HD videos in 720p, but not 1080p. A webcam is positioned in the middle of the display?s top bezel. The speakers, powered by the Creative Sound Blaster Recon3Di chip, are located just above the keyboard and put out a good deal of clear sound.

Although the M14x is on the small side by gaming laptop standards, it's still fairly hefty. It measures about 1.5 by 13.3 by 10.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.5 pounds alone, or 8 pounds figuring in the included power adapter.

Features
You'd expect a laptop designed for gaming to be equipped with above-average hardware, and that's just what the M14x gives you. Its Intel Core i7-3610QM processor is a robust 2.3GHz quad-core chip capable of running as many as eight simultaneous threads by way of Intel?s Hyper-Threading technology. This is nicely complemented by 8GB of 1,600MHz DDR3 RAM; the M14x is capable of holding up to 32GB, but there are no slots free, you can?t add more without replacing what comes preinstalled. For graphics you have a 2GB Nvidia GT 650M discrete card, a decent addition for this price.

You get a one-two hit of storage with a sufficiently roomy 750GB hard drive with a 7,200rpm spin rate and a 32GB solid-state cache drive that helps up its speed to near-SSD levels. The optical drive is a standard-issue slot-loading dual-layer DVD burner. For access to still more removable storage, there?s a reader that lets you access data on MMC, SD, and MSD/PRO cards. Wireless connectivity comes by way of 802.11a/g/n dual-band Wi-Fi, and integrated Bluetooth.

On the left side of the laptop you?ll find three display outputs: VGA, HDMI, and Mini DisplayPort, in addition to a single USB 2.0 charger port, microphone, headphone, and headset jacks, and the aforementioned card reader. The Ethernet jack (which is armed with Killer speed-boost technology; see below) can be found on the laptop's right edge, along with the optical drive and two USB 3.0 ports?which, for the record, are colored black rather than the usual blue. The power adapter connects to the jack on the rear edge of the laptop.

Like most gaming laptops, the M14x R2 emerges from its box with its 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium operating system thoroughly free of bloatware. You will, however, find two icons on the desktop. The first is for the Alienware Command Center, which lets you change any of the system?s six lighting zones from the default blue to any color you want; instantly access the laptop's power settings; tweak the touchpad?s settings for tapping, sensitivity, and virtual scrolling; and configure custom system environments for specific games that you can launch with a single click. The second desktop icon brings up the Qualcomm Atheros Killer Network manager, which lets you view crucial PC performance data, adjust the way various applications access the Internet, and make allowances for some kinds of network traffic so your connection is optimized while you?re gaming online.

The M14x R2 is covered by a one-year parts-and-labor warranty.

Performance
The M14x holds its own as far as performance when compared with other similarly priced laptops we've recently reviewed. Its score of 4,351 in our Futuremark PCMark 7 full-system benchmark is the highest we?ve seen in this class, surpassing the 4,273 earned by the Editors' Choice Eurocom Monster 1.0. Both that machine and the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 surpassed this M14x on our Handbrake video conversion test (with times of 1 minute 14 seconds and 1:17, compared with the Alienware?s 1:18), but the Alienware tied with the IdeaPad for top honors on our CineBench R11.5 rendering and Photoshop CS5 filter application tests (6.26 and 3 minutes 20 seconds, respectively).

Of course, practically no one buys an Alienware machine for its productivity prowess; gaming is typically the primary concern, and at the M14x also doesn?t disappoint?although it's not always the champ. The M14x R2 proved superior to the Monster machine at Crysis using DirectX 10 (DX10) at 1,024-by-768 resolution and Medium quality settings (91.1 frames per second, or fps, versus 85.7fps for the Monster), and Lost Planet 2 when played with DX9. DX11, however, was a different story. The Monster proved better at both our synthetic Futuremark 3DMark 11 tests, on both the Entry (3,964 versus 3,458) and Extreme (726 versus 716) presets, and in Lost Planet 2 with the more recent rendering enabled (28.5fps 26.8fps), showing that it's marginally better equipped for handling newer titles.

Battery life on the M14x R2, which comes equipped with a 63Wh battery, was good: 4 hours 40 minutes as measured by our MobileMark 2007 battery rundown test. This is notably longer than we saw with the Eurocomm Monster (3:30), if not quite as good as the 4:48 from the Lenovo Y480.

The Alienware M14x R2 is in a difficult place right now, if not necessarily a bad one. With the laptop market very much different now than it was even a year ago, it can in some ways seem anachronistic?but it remains a system well worth considering for its intended function of serious gaming. Its chief downside, however, is that its specific hardware is not as future-proofed as would be ideal. Being able to play DX9 games at top frame rates is nice, but superior DX11 skills are important for what comes down the pike tomorrow, and the Eurocom Monster 1.0 is slightly better equipped in that department. For that reason, that system retains its Editors' Choice status, if only by a hair. If you're happy playing games that use the older technology, or if your non-play life requires a bit of productivity on the side, the Alienware M14x R2 is a terrific option.

Gardening is a fun, low-stress way to fill the house with beautiful green growing things. Depending on what you choose to grow, you can either enjoy the beautiful smell and appearance of your plants, or you can harvest them for?

The first step is to choose your spot. You will want a place that gets plenty of sun, so near a window or sliding glass door is always a good choice. If your home has skylights, these are perfect for your indoor garden. In the event that there are no sunny spots inside, you can always purchase fluorescent grow lights for your plants to help them get the nutrients they need. Alternately, you can plan to garden only with plants that require partial sun. Once you have a space to set up your garden, get everything you need to buy. This will include a gardening trowel, seeds or seedlings, planters, drainage saucers and potting soil. A gardening spout or can is also a good buy. Make sure to buy planters that fit the size of the plants you're getting.?

How to Create Your Indoor Garden ? Planting

Once you have all your things together, then the fun part begins!

1- Fill the planters with soil and place them on top of drainage saucers.
2- If you've purchased seedlings, dig a hole large enough for the seedling to fit, carefully remove the seedling from the pot it came in, and gently dig out the bottom so the roots are free.
3- Place the root ball in the hole and fill it back up with soil, burying the roots completely.
4- If you've purchased seeds, simply plant one as deep as the seed packet suggests.
5- You may be able to plant multiple seeds in the same planter. Be sure to space them apart in accordance with the instructions on the seed packet.
6- Finally, water the soil thoroughly until you see water begin to drain into the drainage saucer.

Caring for Your Indoor Garden
Nature is beautiful in that it tends to grow all on its own. This is the perfect lesson for young children, who will be excited to see little sprouts and to track the plant's growth progress. You can tell them how its growth is just like their growth and watch their little eyes get all big! Be sure to caution them about being too rough with your new plant.

If the plant begins to get too big for its initial planter, replant it the way that you initially transplanted the seedling from one pot into the planter.

For the first couple weeks, you be in charge of watering duty. Have the kids watch you do it so they can learn the proper technique. Water your plants according to the instructions on each seed packet. Once the plant is acclimated to your home and is strong enough to handle the occasional over-enthusiastic child, you can have your kids water it as part of their chores.

Having a plant will help your children learn the value of responsibility, as they will be caring for a living creature. This can be an important educational lesson for your kids. Even though the plant does not move around, it is still alive and must be treated with respect. Indoor gardening can bring you and your entire family together. Try it out today!

Here I am! Wall Street is wondering where Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg is as its stock languishes at half its debut price. PR experts say he needs to show leadership or find someone who will.

?Where is Mark Zuckerberg?

The question was posed rather forcefully by CNBC host Jim Cramer last week as the social network?s share price continued to plunge and news broke that an early Facebook investor, Peter Thiel, had sold $400 million worth of stock in the company.

The drop in the value of Facebook since May has caused huge concern about the company on Wall Street, and media outlets have even called for the resignation of the company?s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook shares were trading at around $19 recently, about half?their $38 price when they went public on May 18.

Cramer?s query echoes a broader feeling on Wall Street about the problems now bedeviling the popular social networking company: With the value of its shares down over 50 percent since its highly anticipated IPO, is the company making a hash of the public relations disaster it is now facing; and, just as important,?why has Zuckerberg remained quiet about the state of the company?

Facebook is in crisis, and in a crisis a company?s CEO should be front and center, acknowledging the key issues, apologizing to those affected and giving a commitment to not letting an incident happen again, said Larry Chiagouris, a marketing professor at Pace University?s Lubin School of Business.

?The company needs to make the investment community comfortable that it has people at the top that are serious and determined to make profits,? he said.

?The wonderful thing about the stock market is, in the final analysis, the price of something tends to move toward its real value, so if there really is value in Facebook beyond its current price, the management team has failed to communicate that to investors effectively,? Chiagouris added.

Increasingly, investors are asking if Facebook?s problems are more profound than simply a swooning stock price.

Technical glitches marred Facebook?s first day of trading on the Nasdaq stock market in May, leading to complaints of slow order confirmations and too many shares offered at too high a price. Lawsuits against Facebook and its underwriting banks followed, and Facebook?s share price hasn?t traded anywhere near its $38 offering price since then.

Facebook?s IPO was expected to be one of the biggest stock offerings to ever hit Wall Street, and the company?s offer price?valued the company at $104.2 billion, making it the largest company to go public in the U.S. by market capitalization.

Investors? love for Facebook drove interest in its IPO to extreme levels, and the same herd mentality is now working in reverse, said Chiagouris.

?[Facebook?s stock price] will eventually get to a point where its valuation is unrealistic,? he said. ?To turn that decline around, Facebook has to do a major move -- one would be to replace top management.?

While Mark Zuckerberg is clearly inventive, no one will ever say that he is an effective businessman, Chiagouris said. The company needs to turn the reins over to people who are ?adult? and not beholden to Zuckerberg, he added.

?Facebook has one thing that people want: The largest community in the world. That?s a wonderful asset, but they?re sitting on that asset and they haven?t figured out how to monetize it yet,? Chiagouris said. ?Facebook needs people who are savvy at monetizing an asset, and that would probably not include most of the top managers who are there now.?

Facebook?s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg has long been seen on Wall Street as Facebook?s ?adult? executive, having spent years as a senior executive at Google. But Sandberg has yet to demonstrate any independence at the company, Chiagouris said, and despite her appointment to Facebook's seven-person board last June the company?s stock price has continued to slide.

When it comes to handling a crisis, Facebook?s management team has done a poor job, public relations experts say.

As a social media company, Facebook?s image is its most vital asset, said Mario Almonte is a partner at a New York-based Herman & Almonte Public Relations.

?Once MySpace lost its image, it lost its cool factor,? Almonte said. In the same way, Facebook is having an image problem, and this time it?s with Wall Street investors.

The main problem is Zuckerberg, Almonte said.

?He?s locking himself in a room somewhere and refusing to talk to anyone,? he said. ?I think he needs to swallow his pride and bring in experienced people who understand Wall Street and understand the nature of investing and the politics of Wall Street, because a lot of this is about perception.?

?Zuckerberg needs to step up to the microphone and assure them he is working on a strategy to make Facebook profitable for them - and then he must bring in better financial and marketing experts than himself to develop a clear strategy for transforming Facebook into a profitable enterprise,? he added.

Investors have grown skeptical of the company?s ability to communicate its plan to reverse slowing revenue growth and make money from mobile devices -- a channel of strong user growth.

Google is an example of a technology company that got its advertising business right, Almonte said, because ?the advertising is there, all around the user, but it never gets in the way of the clean, efficient user experience.??

The Following of the Great Mother

The dominate church within Portum Animas. Founded around the belief that the destruction of Viridis Mater was the doing of humanity, and the notion that the planet itself saved all the lives that came to be upon Manus Luna, the Following was once a benevolent sect of people who believed in what they preached. Over the years, and after the founding of Portum Animas, the church served as a guiding influence in the development and building of the city. Due to their deep-rooted influence within the city, the general populace of Portum Animas still finds themselves feeling a connection to the Following. As such, it?s common and easy for the church to sway the opinions and beliefs of people nowadays.

However, in the recent years, no one has quite come to realize just how very different the church has become since its initial founding. Matters regarding the Gifted and such are a very cut and dry topic as far as the Following is concerned; they strictly view the Gifted as being influenced and as people who?ve been corrupted by Discordic; the being they view as their devil.

In line with their supposed will to do good for people, the Following offers up healing services for people who have been injured or who suffer from physical problems by means of the Passively Gifted that work for them.

The Gifted

A sect of the population within Portum Animas whose natural powers have taken a turn for the drastic. Unlike those who are normal, these people have developed their powers to inhuman levels. These are people who are considered to be dangerous and are called out by the Following, and are considered to be evil, and are named as such. In order for the Following to maintain control over the populace, and to keep panic from inciting, they give out a false explanation for why the Gifted are born, and why it is that their powers are so different from everyone else?s.

The Gifted are not treated as human by any means if they are discovered as such. The Following has twisted the minds of so many people in Portum Animas, that even families will turn against their own if they are found out as a Gifted. They have no rights to speak of, none at all. More often than not, if a Gifted is discovered out and reported to the proper authorities, they are detained, and taken in for ?cleansing.? Because it is believed by so many that the Gifted have had their senses warped and distorted by Discordic, and that they have been twisted to want to cause misfortune and chaos with their powers, the Gifted are feared. Greatly feared by many.

Once a Gifted has been detained by the church and government, that is often the last time they are seen by their families and friends. Despite the fact that they are suppose to taken in to undergo a process called a ?cleansing,? it is a known fact that most who have to go through this process do not survive, as it is explained by the church that cleansing one of Discordic is a dangerous and near fatal process. . . . Those Gifted who have been successfully cleansed, and survive often wind up going into service of the Following, as their powers will have taken a turn from destructive, and with their souls freed of Discordic?s evil and corruption, they would?ve seen the ?light,? and come to serve the Following in order to absolve themselves of their sins. Those Gifted who?ve survived their cleansings are noted as ?Passive Gifted? due to the change their powers undergo.

Cleansing

A process employed by the Following in order to purge the evils of Discordic from the souls of those he has corrupted; otherwise known as the Gifted. The exact details and steps of this . . . process are unknown but to a select few individuals within the church who have been trained specifically to carry it out. It is said to be a very hard, very thing to both undergo and to carry out on a person, as it pits the employer?s soul against the corrupted soul of the Gifted. The Following explains a cleansing to be so harsh due to what must happen in order for Discordic?s grasp upon the afflicted?s soul to be relinquished. It is said that during this process, the soul of the one carrying it out and undergoing it must be called from their body, and because an average person has not had the training to undergo a separation of their soul from their body, when Discordic?s hold has been terminated upon them . . . the soul slips away.

It loses touch with its body and ascends to the afterlife, leaving the Gifted as good as dead. There are a few select people though who?ve been strong enough to remain alive through this, and have their souls cleaned of evil?s touch. These are the Passively Gifted; often after they?ve undergone their cleansing, they come to aid the Following with their changed powers. They will have gone from possessing powers of destruction, to being capable of ?constructive? things, such as being able to heal others. It is believed by many that those individuals who?ve been trained to carry out the cleansing process are themselves some of the few individuals who managed to survive it, and become a Passively Gifted.

Passively Gifted

Tropical Storm Isaac lashes Cuba, with Florida Keys in sights

HAVANA (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac, back over warm ocean waters, lashed Cuba with winds and rain as it swept toward the Florida Keys, where it was expected to strike at or near hurricane strength on Sunday.

The storm left six dead in Haiti, still recovering from a 2010 earthquake, and at least three missing in the Dominican Republic after battering their shared island of Hispaniola on Saturday.

No deaths or injuries had been reported in Cuba, which got off lightly when the storm crossed its eastern flank instead of raking up the length of the island as originally predicted, but it still sustained damage.

Isaac was expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour, as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall at midweek on the U.S. Gulf Coast, somewhere between Florida and Louisiana, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

At 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT) Sunday, Isaac was about 135 miles east-southeast of Key West and packing top sustained winds of 65 miles an hour, according to the Miami-based NHC.

The storm's driving winds and heavy rains were already being felt intermittently across south Florida and it was expected to be at or near hurricane force when it swept across the Florida Keys by Sunday evening, the NHC said in an advisory.

A storm becomes a hurricane when sustained winds reach a minimum of 74 miles per hour.

Energy producers in the Gulf of Mexico were shutting down production and the U.S. Republican Party said it would recess its national convention in Tampa, Florida for a day out of safety concerns as the storm bore down on the state.

The storm could force a short-term shut-down of 43 percent of U.S. offshore oil capacity and 38 percent of its natural gas output, according to forecasters at Weather Insight, an arm of Thomson Reuters.

Republicans, who will formally nominate former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate for the November election, will convene their four-day meeting on Monday as scheduled, then recess until Tuesday.

Tampa, located on Florida's west coast, faces a threat of from both winds and heavy rains from Isaac, according to NHC meteorologist David Zelinsky.

"For the Tampa area, storm surge values could be three to five feet above ground," Zelinsky said, referring to the threat of storm-driven inundations of the city from Tampa Bay.

In its latest advisory, the NHC said Isaac was churning west-northwest at 20 miles per hour. The storm was officially expected to make landfall anywhere between the Florida Panhandle and eastern Louisiana early on Wednesday as a Category 2 hurricane.

Pakistani court gives PM more time to obey order

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's top court on Monday gave the country's prime minister three more weeks to decide whether to obey its order to reopen an old corruption case against the president or face the prospect of being ousted from office like his predecessor.

The decision followed an appearance by Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf before the judges and was seen as a rare conciliatory gesture by the supreme court toward the government after months of conflict over the issue.

With the reprieve, the judges may be responding to criticism from the public for relentlessly pursuing the case. Some have suggested the court should focus on legal matters affecting ordinary citizens and leave the government alone to tackle pressing problems like the country's ailing economy and fight against the Taliban.

The dispute centers on a graft case in a Swiss court against President Asif Ali Zardari dating back to the late 1990s. The Pakistani Supreme Court has demanded the government write a letter to Swiss authorities asking them to reopen the case. The government has refused, saying Zardari enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office.

Zardari is in little immediate danger of being tried ? the Swiss have indicated they have no plans to continue with the case, at least not while the president is in office. But the supreme court still wants the government to write the letter.

The court convicted then-Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani of contempt in April and ousted him from office two months later for refusing its order. The ruling Pakistan People's Party rallied support to elect the new premier, Ashraf, and has given no indication it plans to implement the court's decision.

Many expected the judges to announce Monday that they would charge Ashraf with contempt for also refusing to write the letter.

But they gave the prime minister until Sept. 18 to decide whether he would follow the court's order after he argued he needed more time to find a way to resolve the crisis ? an argument the government has made in the past when faced with similar deadlines.

"The government and I have full respect for the courts, and I have a strong desire to resolve this issue amicably so the prestige and respect of the judiciary is not only maintained, but is increased," Ashraf said.

It is unclear what sort of compromise could end the dispute. Zardari has said in the past that his government will never write the letter.

Some have criticized the court for its persistent pressure on the first civilian government in the country's history poised to finish its five-year term. Past governments were toppled by direct or indirect intervention by the country's powerful army, often with help of the judiciary.

The current government's term ends in early 2013. There is little chance of a coup, but the government might have to call early elections.

Also Monday, two gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on a car carrying Shiite Muslims in southwestern Pakistan, killing three of them, said senior police officer Wazir Khan Nasir. Two Shiites were also wounded in the attack in Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan province, he said.

No one claimed responsibility.

In a separate incident late Sunday, gunmen killed five Sunni Muslims in the town of Mach in Baluchistan, government official Pervez Ahmed said.

Baluchistan is the site of a long-running insurgency by rebels who want a greater share of the region's resources and more autonomy. It's also home to Islamist militants who frequently target Shiites.

Shiites make up a sizeable minority in Pakistan, but many Sunni extremists do not view them as true Muslims.

Among the examples Romney cites: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's claims that he hadn't paid personal taxes in a decade, which the GOP candidate described as "ridiculous."

"The attack about how Romney's responsible for this woman who died ? and the vice president's comments about 'chains.' Really?" Romney told USA Today. "The White House just keeps stepping lower and lower and lower, and the people of America know this is an important election and they deserve better than they've seen."

But Romney insists he won't change his focus to appeal more to voters on an emotional basis.

"I know there are some people who do a very good job acting and pretend they're something they're not. ... You get what you see. I am who I am," Romney told Politico's Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen. "I don't think everybody likes me. I don't believe that, by any means. But I do believe that people of this country are looking for someone who can get the country growing again with more jobs and more take-home pay, and I think they realize this president had four years to do that. ? He got every piece of legislation he wanted passed, and it didn't work. I think they want someone who has a different record, and I do."

But while Romney assailed the Obama campaign for its attacks, the presumptive Republican nominee has grown more aggressive on the trail in recent weeks. Two weeks ago, he slammed Obama for running a campaign based on "division and anger and hate." He's accused Obama of trying to undo historic welfare reforms requiring recipients to work and of using Medicare funds to pay for so-called "Obamacare"?two lines of attack that have been disputed by independent fact-checkers.

On Friday, Romney made a birth certificate joke during a rally in Michigan that was widely interpreted as a dig at conspiracy theories that Obama wasn't born in the United States?though Romney later insisted it wasn't a joke about Obama.

Asked about the joke, Romney told both USA Today and Politico he was simply being "human" and "spontaneous" and injecting a little humor into the campaign. And he argued that Obama's attacks have been personal, while his attacks on Obama have been based on policy.

"I think in the final analysis, people will recognize those attacks for what they are, and they'll make a decision based on who can do a better job creating jobs and providing more take-home pay for the middle class of America," Romney told USA Today. "I believe I am that person."
