India abuzz about mystery woman at Olympics

By The Associated Press

A mysterious woman in red has caused an international incident at the London Olympics.

Indian officials are mystified ? and miffed ? after an unknown young woman managed to march with the country's athletes and officials during the opening ceremony Friday night.

Games organizers on Sunday downplayed security concerns around the unscripted moment, saying the interloper was a ceremony cast member and had been screened before entering the Olympic Park.

Images from Friday's ceremony showed a young woman in turquoise jeans and a red jacket marching alongside Indian flag bearer Sushil Kumar at the head of the delegation of 40 athletes in bright yellow and navy blue.

"We are totally dazed," Indian press attach? Harpal Singh Bedi said. "How can a person without any accreditation walk past?"

Indian officials said they had no idea who the woman was. Indian media identified her as Madhura Nagendra, a graduate student from Bangalore who had been living in London.

Her father, K. Nagendra, was quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency as saying that his daughter had been chosen to dance in director Danny Boyle's ceremony, and he speculated that she might have been asked by organizers to escort India's team into the stadium.

Bedi said India's acting chef de mission, P.K.M. Raja, had sent games organizers an official letter of complaint.

London organizing chief Sebastian Coe insisted the woman had not posed a threat to the ceremony. He told reporters she was "a cast member who clearly got slightly overexcited."

Police: Woman tried to break into Ohio jail

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) ? Police in southwest Ohio are perplexed about why a woman tried to sneak into a county jail before telling authorities to arrest her.

Deputies with the Butler County Sheriff's Office arrested 36-year-old Tiffany R. Hurd when she was caught trying to climb over a fence into Butler County Jail in Hamilton, near Cincinnati.

The Sunday morning arrest came after jail staff told Hurd to leave the property, but she told them to arrest her.

Deputies then repeatedly asked Hurd to leave, but she refused and attempted to climb the fence again. Deputies say was intoxicated.

Hurd was arrested on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct. She is now at the county jail.

Hurd's bond has been set at $2,500. Her attorney did not immediately return a message Monday.

Insight: At least three banks seen central to Libor rigging

(Reuters) - New details from court documents and sources close to the Libor scandal investigation suggest that groups of traders working at three major European banks were heavily involved in rigging global benchmark interest rates.

Some of those traders, including one who used to work at Barclays Plc in New York, still have senior positions on Wall Street trading desks.

Until now, most of the attention has involved traders at Barclays, which last month reached a $453 million settlement with U.S. and UK authorities for its role in the manipulation of rates. Now, it is becoming clear that traders from at least two other banks - UK-based Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc and Switzerland's UBS AG - played a central role.

Between them, the three banks employed more than a dozen traders who sought to influence rates in either dollar, euro or yen rates. Some of the traders who are being probed have worked for several banks under scrutiny, raising the possibility that the rate fixing became more ingrained as traders changed jobs.

The documents reviewed by Reuters in analyzing the traders' involvement included court filings by Canadian regulators who have been investigating potential antitrust issues; settlement documents with Barclays filed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission in Washington and by the Financial Services Authority in the U.K.; and a private employment lawsuit filed by a former RBS trader in Singapore's High Court.

The scandal, which began to come to light in 2008, has become a time bomb for regulators and a big focus for politicians on both sides of the Atlantic. At issue is the manipulation between at least 2005 and 2009 of rates that are used to determine the cost of trillions of dollars of borrowings, including everything from home loans to credit card rates.

One former Barclays employee under scrutiny, Reuters has learned, is Jay V. Merchant, according to people familiar with the situation. Merchant, who oversaw the U.S. dollar swaps trading desk at Barclays in New York, worked for the bank from March 2006 to October 2009, according to employment records maintained by the U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

Merchant currently holds a similar position at UBS, where he works out of the Swiss bank's offices in Stamford, Connecticut, according to FINRA. He did not return requests for comment.

People familiar with the investigation said authorities are looking at whether some individuals on Merchant's trading desk tried to influence the rate on Libor by communicating with other traders in London to get a higher return on certain swaps the desk was trading. His specific role is unclear.

The Department of Justice declined to comment.

Merchant's attorney, John Kenney of Hoguet Newman Regal & Kenney, did not respond to requests seeking comment.

A UBS spokeswoman said that the bank has "no reason to believe Mr. Merchant has engaged in any improper conduct at UBS." The spokeswoman, who noted that Merchant is on a two-week vacation, declined to comment on the broader investigation.

Barclays declined to comment. In a statement, an RBS spokeswoman said the bank is cooperating with the investigation.

SPREAD FROM BARCLAYS

Earlier this week, Reuters reported that federal prosecutors in Washington have begun reaching out to lawyers for some of the individuals under scrutiny as they get closer to bringing possible criminal charges.

The dollar and euro rate-rigging appears to have begun in earnest in early 2005 in the dollar market, according to the documents reviewed by Reuters. By August of that year, Barclays traders were reaching out to traders at other big global banks to manipulate their rates to make them favorable to Barclays' trading positions.

Soon, the trading had crossed to the euro rate markets, according to the settlement documents filed in the Barclays investigation. And by 2007, traders at RBS and UBS were seeking to influence the yen rate market, according to documents filed in 2011 in Singapore's High Court and in Canada's Ontario Superior Court.

Traders at Barclays are believed to have participated in manipulating the rate for the dollar and the rate for the euro known as Euribor, according to documents filed in the Barclays settlement last month.

RBS and UBS traders are a focus of the global investigation because of their alleged involvement in seeking to influence yen-denominated rates.

Two RBS traders in London, Brent Davies and Will Hall, are alleged to have agreed to help a trader at UBS, Thomas Hayes, to manipulate yen Libor, according to court documents filed by the Canadian Competition Bureau.

UBS is cooperating with Canadian and U.S. authorities, according to people familiar with the situation.

Hayes worked at UBS from 2006 to 2009. He later moved to Citigroup where he remained until 2010, after which he left the bank. Hayes, Davies and Hall could not be reached for comment.

The documents reveal that Hayes also contacted traders at other banks in London to get them to manipulate yen rates. They include Peter O'Leary at HSBC Holdings Plc, Guillaume Adolph at Deutsche, and Paul Glands at JPMorgan. A second UBS employee sought to get a Citigroup trader, who formerly had worked at UBS, to influence rates.

None of these traders could be reached for comment.

CONDONED

In addition, a former trader at RBS, Tan Chi Min, said in a wrongful termination lawsuit filed in the Singapore High Court in 2011 that he was forced out for "improperly seeking to influence" the setting of Libor. Tan, who ran a trading desk at RBS, said in the suit that improper rate-rigging was known by some at the bank and condoned.

Tan denied trying to manipulate Libor, and alleged in the 2011 court filing, and one in March this year, that about a half dozen other RBS traders openly tried to request specific rates.

Tan's attorney, N. Sreenivasan, declined to comment because the court case is ongoing.

Beyond traders at the three European banks, authorities are still probing the role of others.

For example, traders at JPMorgan Chase & Co also interacted with some of the traders under scrutiny who worked for Barclays and RBS, according to a person familiar with the situation and court documents filed in Singapore.

Similarly, Deutsche Bank AG also had several employees whose trading is under scrutiny by authorities, according to people familiar with the situation and court documents filed in Canada.

JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank declined to comment.

NESCA News & Notes: Study: Adaptive Working Memory Training ...

From SHARPBRAINS.com

By Dr. David Rabiner
July 18, 2012

For a num?ber of rea?sons, there remains an impor?tant need to develop research sup?ported treat?ments for ADHD in addi?tion to med?ica?tion and behav?ior therapy.

Regard?ing med?ica?tion, not all chil?dren ben?e?fit from tak?ing it, some expe?ri?ence intol?er?a?ble side effects, and many con?tinue to strug?gle even when med?ica?tion pro?vides some ben?e?fit.

Behav?ior ther?apy can be dif?fi?cult for par?ents and teach?ers to con?sis?tently imple?ment, and often helps but does not elim?i?nate a child?s behav?ioral prob?lems.

Fur?ther?more, nei?ther treat?ment yields pos?i?tive changes that per?sist when the treat?ment is dis?con?tin?ued. Finally, despite numer?ous stud?ies doc?u?ment?ing the short? and inter?me?di?ate term ben?e?fits of these treat?ments, evi?dence of their impact on children?s long-term suc?cess is less evident.

One rel?a?tively recent devel?op?ment in the realm of ADHD treat?ments is work?ing mem?ory train?ing. Work?ing mem?ory (WM) refers to the abil?ity to hold and manip?u?late infor?ma?tion in mind for sub?se?quent use and is crit?i?cally impor?tant for a vari?ety of learn?ing activ?i?ties. For exam?ple, when a child is asked ques?tions about a story he has read, work?ing mem?ory allows the child to retain and review the story infor?ma?tion in mind to answer the ques?tions.

In doing men?tal math, work?ing mem?ory is used to hold the dig?its in mind and manip?u?late them, e.g., add or sub?tract, to gen?er?ate the answer.

Work?ing mem?ory is also impor?tant in the con?trol of atten?tion and is a strong pre?dic?tor of aca?d?e?mic suc?cess. It is defi?cient in many indi?vid?u?als with ADHD; in fact, some researchers believe that work?ing mem?ory deficits are cen?tral to ADHD and under?line the inat?ten?tive and hyperactive-impulsive behav?ior that char?ac?ter?izes the dis?or?der. You can learn more about work?ing mem?ory and ADHD here.

Sev?eral years ago, I reviewed a study of work?ing mem?ory train?ing for ADHD that yielded promis?ing find?ings. Chil?dren were ran?domly assigned to receive either high inten?sity (HI) or low inten?sity WM train?ing. The HI treat?ment involved per?form?ing com?put?er?ized WM tasks, e.g., remem?ber?ing the sequence in which lights appeared in dif?fer?ent por?tions of a grid, recall?ing a sequence of num?bers in reverse order, where the dif?fi?culty level was reg?u?larly adjusted to match the child?s per?for?mance by increas?ing or decreas?ing the items to be recalled.

This is described below as ?adap?tive? train?ing because the dif?fi?culty level adapts to match the child?s capa?bil?ity. In this train?ing con?di?tion, chil?dren are con?sis?tently chal?lenged to expand their work?ing mem?ory capacity.

In the LI con?di?tion, the tasks were sim?i?lar but the dif?fi?culty remained low through?out, i.e., the num?ber of items did not increase when chil?dren responded cor?rectly. For these chil?dren, their work?ing mem?ory capac?ity was not con?sis?tently chal?lenged and was not expected to grow as a result. This served as the con?trol condition.

Train?ing was con?ducted 5 days a week over a 5 week period; each ses?sion lasted approx?i?mately 30 to 40 min?utes. Fol?low?ing treat?ment, chil?dren who received high inten?sity train?ing showed stronger work?ing mem?ory per?for?mance than chil?dren in the con?trol con?di?tion; these gains were evi?dent on work?ing mem?ory tasks that had not been trained and remained evi?dent 3 months after train?ing ended.

Fur?ther?more, only chil?dren who received high inten?sity train?ing showed sig?nif?i?cant declines in par?ent rat?ings of ADHD symp?toms showed sig?nif?i?cant and mean?ing?ful declines for chil?dren. These declines remained evi?dent 3 months later.

Although these were very pos?i?tive find?ings, a lim?i?ta?tion was that no treat?ment effects were found for teacher rat?ings of children?s behav?ior. Thus, there was no indi?ca?tion that ben?e?fits observed by par?ents, and mir?rored in the work?ing mem?ory assess?ments, had gen?er?al?ized to the class?room.

Given the need to improve behav?ior at school for chil?dren with ADHD, it is con?cern?ing that sim?i?lar find?ings, i.e., train?ing-related gains in work?ing mem?ory per?for?mance and in par?ent rat?ings of children?s behav?ior, but less?observation of ben?e?fits by teach?ers, have emerged in sub?se?quent studies.

Newly Pub?lished Study

A study pub?lished online recently in Neu?rother?a?peu?tics [Green et. al., (2012). Will work?ing mem?ory train?ing gen?er?al?ize to improve off-task behav?ior in chil?dren with attention-deficit/hyper?ac?tiv?ity dis?or?der? DOI 10.1007/s13311-012?0124-y] is encour?ag?ing in that it pro?vides that strongest evi?dence to date that ben?e?fits from work?ing mem?ory train?ing can gen?er?al?ize to aca?d?e?mic settings.

Par?tic?i?pants were 26 chil?dren (18 males; ages 7 to 14 years old) who were ran?domly assigned to receive adap?tive work?ing mem?ory train?ing or the low inten?sity con?trol train?ing. Ten chil?dren were on med?ica?tion and remained on meds dur?ing the study; this was con?trolled for in the analyses.

The train?ing pro?gram used was Cogmed Work?ing Mem?ory train?ing (the researchers had no affil?i?a?tion with Cogmed). The stan?dard train?ing pro?to?col of 5 ses?sions per week over 5 weeks was employed. Per stan?dard Cogmed pro?ce?dures, train?ing was done at home and was mon?i?tored remotely by a qual?i?fied coach to help ensure the pro?to?col was followed.

The main study out?come was children?s behav?ior dur?ing the Restricted Aca?d?e?mic Sit?u?a?tions Task (RAST). Dur?ing the RAST, which takes place in a lab set?ting, chil?dren are instructed to com?plete a series of aca?d?e?mic work sheets for 15 min?utes, and not to leave their seat, or touch any of the toys or games in the room, dur?ing that time. The child is left alone to com?plete the work and their behav?ior is observed from behind a one-way mir?ror. The child?s behav?ior is coded for the amount of off task behav?ior, e.g., look?ing away from the paper, get?ting out of his or her seat, fid?get?ing, vocal?iz?ing, or play?ing with objects unre?lated to the task.

The task thus allows for highly con?trolled behav?ioral obser?va?tions and is fre?quently used to eval?u?ate the effect of med?ica?tion on ADHD behav?iors in phar?ma?ceu?ti?cal tri?als. It is sen?si?tive to moment to moment off task behav?ior that a teacher or par?ent might not detect.

The main ques?tion asked in this study was whether chil?dren who received adap?tive train?ing would show less off task behav?ior dur?ing the RAST than chil?dren in the con?trol con?di?tion. If so, it would indi?cate a pos?i?tive treat?ment effect of work?ing mem?ory train?ing that gen?er?al?ized to a set?ting highly rel?e?vant to behav?ior in school. Obser?va?tions of treat?ment and con?trol chil?dren was made by a trained observer who did not know which group ? adap?tive treat?ment or con?trol ? each child was in.

In addi?tion to the RAST, children?s work?ing mem?ory per?for?mance on tasks that dif?fered from those used in train?ing (the Work?ing Mem?ory Com?pos?ite from the WISC-IV) and par?ent behav?ior rat?ings were obtained.

Results

Impact on Work?ing Mem?ory - Con?sis?tent with what has been reported in prior work?ing mem?ory train?ing stud?ies, chil?dren receiv?ing adap?tive train?ing showed a sig?nif?i?cant increase in the work?ing mem?ory score on the WISC-IV after train?ing; chil?dren in the con?trol con?di?tion did not.

Rat?ing Scales - Both groups showed a decline on par?ents? rat?ings of ADHD behav?iors and this did not dif?fer between the groups. Base?line scores for chil?dren in the adap?tive train?ing group were lower than in the con?trol group so they may have had less room for improvement.

Behav?ior dur?ing the RAST - The main out?come mea?sure from the RAST was the amount of off task behav?ior, i.e., look?ing away from the work sheet rather than focus?ing on it, dur?ing the 15 minute seat work period. At base?line, scores for each group were equiv?a?lent. Fol?low?ing train?ing, when the RAST was read?minin?stered, off-task behav?ior for chil?dren in the con?trol group remained at their base?line level.

For the adap?tive train?ing group, there was a pro?nounced and sta?tis?ti?cally sig?nif?i?cant decline. Adap?tively trained chil?dren were also less likely to play with objects dur?ing the task. Dif?fer?ences in the other behav?ior cat?e?gories ? fid?get?ing, leav?ing the seat, and vocal?iz?ing ? were not significant.

Sum?mary and Implications

This is an impor?tant study ? both for Cogmed Work?ing Mem?ory Train?ing specif?i?cally and the cog?ni?tive train?ing field in gen?eral. The results strongly sug?gest that work?ing mem?ory train?ing can yield reduc?tions in off task behav?ior dur?ing aca?d?e?mic work for chil?dren with ADHD. This has not been pre?vi?ously demon?strated and begins to address an impor?tant gap in the research base on work?ing mem?ory train?ing for ADHD, i.e., the lim?ited indi?ca?tion of train?ing effects that gen?er?al?ize to the class?room.

While the RAST reflects a con?trolled obser?va?tion set?ting rather than an actual class?room, behav?ior dur?ing the RAST does cor?re?late with in class behav?ior. And, it is a fre?quently used and accepted mea?sure for deter?min?ing med?ica?tion treat?ment effects for ADHD.

The study has sev?eral strengths includ?ing a care?fully diag?nosed sam?ple, the use of ran?dom assign?ment, an appro?pri?ate con?trol group, the use of mul?ti?ple out?come mea?sures, and observers who were blind to children?s treat?ment assign?ment. These are all key ele?ments of a care?fully designed inter?ven?tion trial.

As with any sin?gle study, there are also lim?i?ta?tions to note. Key among these is a rel?a?tively small sam?ple size. Thus, repli?ca?tion with a larger sam?ple would cer?tainly be war?ranted. And, although the RAST pro?vides a valid and highly con?trolled set?ting to observe behav?ior, future stud?ies should also include obser?va?tions of children?s behav?ior in their actual class?room. Although this makes for a more com?plex study, the class?room is ulti?mately the set?ting where increases in focused, on task behav?ior dur?ing aca?d?e?mic work needs to occur. Finally, this study did not fol?low par?tic?i?pants beyond the end of treat?ment so the dura?tion of ben?e?fits observed is not known.

These lim?i?ta?tions not with?stand?ing, the authors have pre?sented impor?tant new data on the poten?tial ben?e?fits of work?ing mem?ory train?ing by demon?strat?ing gen?er?al?iza?tion of train?ing ben?e?fits to a rel?e?vant set?ting for aca?d?e?mic work. Given the grow?ing inter?est in work?ing mem?ory train?ing ? and other forms of cog?ni?tive train?ing ? it is likely that results from a num?ber of addi?tional stud?ies on these approaches will become avail?able over the next sev?eral years.

Information and Tips on Family Planning | FamilyA-Z.blogspot.com

Today, it appears as though there was less emphasis on the importance of family planning for individuals who need to be accountable and have children when they are actually ready. And with teenage pregnancy and unplanned pregnancies on the rise, you might be questioning how one can go about avoiding the potential for changing into a statistic. Nevertheless, the truth is that you've got the final word say and control over when you have children, and there are various kinds of female contraception out there to consider, in order to meet your loved ones planning goals and enjoy your life to the fullest before beginning a family.

On the subject of the varied methods of female contraception which might be out there, maybe probably the most broadly used and trusted one is the birth control pill. These are a pack of tablets that sometimes comes with 28 in a pack and comprise hormones to prevent ovulation in order that it is essentially unattainable for a lady to turn out to be pregnant. In the pack, there are sometimes 21 hormone tablets and 7 placebos which might be taken through the week of the lady's period. The capsule is over ninety nine% efficient in preventing pregnancy and has been a serious focus in womens health. Nevertheless, it doesn't stop in opposition to STDs or STIs.

A number of the unwanted side effects to remember before getting on contraception embody weight achieve, headache, and a distinction in interval flow. Nevertheless, most women do not experience any extreme unwanted side effects and, in the event that they do, a distinct model can at all times be tried as a method to get rid of them. This type of contraception stays the single hottest that apply strictly to womens health.

Another fashionable type of female contraception today is the birth control ring, which has an analogous impact because the capsule in preventing pregnancy. The ring, nevertheless, is placed over the cervix in order that sperm can't enter. The position of the ring itself is completed by a gynaecologist in a process that usually takes just a few minutes. Additionally, the unwanted side effects for individuals who use the patch are relatively rare and embody the same unwanted side effects as those that take the pill. Still, the benefits are usually not having to worry about remembering to take the capsule every day.

EYES ON LONDON: Brief shower doesn't dampen mood

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

JOKING ABOUT THE WEATHER

The emcee in Olympic Stadium is cracking jokes about the weather: "We need the rain! It wouldn't be the London Olympics without rain!"

? Cassandra Vinograd ? Twitter http://twitter.com/cassvinograd

___

IT'S RAINING!

It just had to happen. It's started to rain inside the Olympic Stadium

"Don't worry! Don't worry! It's only a little flat rain," said an organizer through a megaphone as a group of performers dressed as milk maids started to pick up the pace on the way inside.

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://twitter.com/APkrawczynski

___

LIKE A FARMYARD

The animals have just come into the stadium. That is 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and nine geese. One of those horses is a shire horse. The music is starting to build and there are camera flashes all around the stadium. What will the animals make of that?

? Fergus Bell ? Twitter http://twitter.com/fergb

__

MANY COLORS

They've come from all over for these games and this opening ceremony. Fans seen filing into Olympic Stadium wearing the colors of Canada, Mexico, Poland, Italy, Russia, Germany, Brazil and seemingly all points in between.

That includes the most well-represented nation, of course: Team GB.

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/APkrawczynski

___

NO RAIN - YET

There's been so much talk about the British weather and if rain would spoil the opening ceremony. Well, it's still anyone's guess.

AP's John Krawczynski, outside the main stadium in Olympic Park, says: "It's cool with a light breeze and no rain. But it does feel as though it could rain at any moment."

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://twitter.com/APkrawczynski

__

ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere is absolutely electric. We have already had a few attempts at doing the wave. Crew members in white coveralls and painter hats are parading these clouds around the stadium. Music up. Cheers up. scenes playing on the screens of past Olympians and young kids.

? Danica Kirka ? Twitter http://twitter.com/danicakirka

___

CEREMONY SECURITY

Security lines, or lack thereof, are moving easily at the Olympic Park. It does feel a bit like stumbling onto a military base ? fresh-faced young soldiers in uniform are everywhere, and every single X-ray machine and scanner is manned by soldiers rather than other organizing committee staff.

So many soldiers that some are just standing around, waiting for a crushof spectators that has not yet materialized.

? Cassandra Vinograd ? Twitter http://twitter.com/cassvinograd

___

PRESIDENTIAL FRIENDS

Maya Moore has spent so much time with the Obama family, she could be an honorary member.

She was the only female basketball player invited to play with the President in a game to celebrate his 49th birthday in 2010. She also did a soon to be released public service announcement with Michelle Obama in May supporting the "Let's Move!" campaign.

The two shared a hug and chatted for a few minutes Friday morning after the first lady opened her stint as leader of the U.S. Olympics delegation attending a breakfast with Olympians.

"That was a little treat," Moore says. "Any time I can see the president or first lady it's such a treat. She's someone who you can relate to because she's very active and enjoys sports. We know that whole family loves basketball."

? Doug Feinberg ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/dougfeinberg

___

EXCITED

Less than an hour before showtime and excited visitors are filing into Olympic Stadium.

Tarik Lacene, a Canadian who lives in London, scored tickets to the opening ceremony.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Lacene says. "It's amazing to think that over 1 billion people will be watching it on TV and we're actually here."

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/APkrawczynski

___

THE ANTICIPATION

From AP's Fergus Bell in place and awaiting the opening ceremony:

"A Mexican wave just started. The crowd are getting fired up. The scene is set on the stage in front of me depicting a rural idyll. There are tractors and a water wheel. There is a small cottage in the middle with two smoking chimneys. I have seen similar scenes in the English countryside but this looks a little cleaner, a little more fairytale.

? Fergus Bell ? Twitter http://twitter.com/fergb

___

GETTING THERE

AP's Cassandra Vinograd reports from the streets ? well, the railway tracks ? of London:

This reporter was in a bit of a panic ? left work late and wondered how she would ever get through the crowds to board a train to Olympic Park.

But tubes were not crowded and St. Pancras International, where you catch the high speed Javelin train, is a breeze. There were no lines whatsoever to get on the Javelin ? despite crowd-flow measures (barricades, like what airports use for long check-in lines). The line spaces were all empty.

The only glitch was a few travelers grumbling over a broken ticket machine, leaving only one working dispenser on the Javelin platform.

But no worries in the end. With so few jostling for space, everyone got a ticket in time.

?Cassandra Vinograd ? Twitter http://twitter.com/cassvinograd

___

NO KNOCKOFFS

Egypt's Olympic team won't be wearing knockoffs after all at the London Games.

Nike announced Friday it was donating its gear to the Egyptian athletes. This after the country's committee chairman said they'd turned to a Chinese distributor because the real thing was just too expensive.

Not so during the opening ceremony, though. Nike's shipment isn't due to arrive in London until Saturday.

___

WHITE RIBBONS

The widow of Alexander Litvinenko, the exiled former Russian agent who died from a mysterious case of radiation poisoning, is calling on Londoners to protest Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the Olympics.

Litvinenko issued a statement shortly before his 2006 death, accusing Putin of ordering him to be poisoned. He had been living in London since fleeing Russia in 2000. In a book written in exile, he accused Russia's main security agency, for which he once worked, of staging the 1999 apartment building bombings that were blamed on Chechen rebels and used as a justification for starting the second Chechen war.

British-Russian relations suffered a serious setback in 2007 after Russia refused to extradite the man that Britain named as the main suspect in Litvinenko's death.

Marina Litvinenko on Friday issued a statement saying "Mr. Putin's agents killed my husband" and called on Londoners wo wear white ribbons, the emblem of the Russian opposition, to proest Putin's visit Aug. 2 that is to include watching the judo.

? Jim Heintz ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jeheintz

___

WHERE TO WATCH?

AP's Jenna Fryer reports from the streets of London:

Is there no such thing as a sports bar here?

Looking for a pub where I can hang with the locals and watch the opening ceremony is proving to be more challenging than I expected.

Since arriving, I've noticed that not that many pubs have televisions, so I've had to ask around for recommendations for the ceremonies. The first two I called ? one of which was the favorite watering hole of the late Amy Winehouse ? said they had no plans to show the ceremonies. "Tonight's just a regular pub night," I was told.

It seemed strange to see bars without TV's, but to not have such a big event blaring from every television in the country tonight is just bizarre.

? Jenna Fryer ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jennafryer

___

PREPPED FOR HISTORY

Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has arrived in London for his historic debut at the Olympics and says he's feeling "a mixture of pride, happiness and anticipation" at the end of his long journey to compete at the highest level in able-bodied competition.

Pistorius made the short flight across from his training camp in northern Italy and says he's "really excited" to attend the opening ceremony.

The South African has been battling for four years to reach the 2012 games. He was cleared to compete against able-bodied competitors on his carbon fiber blades in 2008, ran two qualifying times for London in the last 12 months, but missed out on the crucial third under his country's strict qualifying criteria.

But the selectors had a last-minute change of heart weeks before the games and picked him for the individual 400 meters as well as the 4x400 relay.

In an email to the AP, Pistorius says: "This feels like a long time coming and I am ready! This is going to be, I hope, an incredible few weeks of my life."

His first run at the Olympics will be in the 400 heats on Aug. 4. It'll be history.

FOOD WITH NO NAME

Food choices are simple at the ExCel arena, the giant convention center hosting seven Olympic disciplines. Because McDonald's has exclusive rights to sell branded products, the dozen concessions at the venue are prohibited from using a specific name.

So, here's what's on offer on large signs:

?"Traditional Roast."

?"Sandwich."

?"Bagel"

?"Italian" or "Chinese."

? "Baked Potato" ? which, by the way, is often called a "jacket potato" in these parts.

? Stephen Wade ? Twitter http://twitter.com/StephenWadeAP

___

KEEP DREAM-ING

You get the sense that LeBron James doesn't want to hear another word about it.

"Who's better ? 1992 or 2012?" That's been a talking point for weeks, the comparison between the 1992 Dream Team that went to Barcelona and this year's Olympic team.

"It's never going to happen," James said Friday of a hypothetical game between the two teams. "It doesn't matter how much conversation that we have about this team and the '92 Dream Team. It's never going to be played. Father Time is not going to allow that to happen. So it doesn't even matter."

That wasn't his way of downplaying expectations about what to expect from the U.S. squad in London.

Quite the contrary.

James, who won the NBA MVP award, the NBA Finals MVP award and led the Miami Heat to the title this past season, is fully expecting to add Olympic gold to his unbelievable year.

"I know one thing," James said. "I know we have a great team. And if we play as a team, like we're capable of doing, we can be one of the best teams ever assembled.

Role of Nutrition - Heathrow Chiropractic - Lake Mary

Last updated 18 hours ago

As your chiropractor will tell you, a balanced diet rich in nutrients is important in maintaining your overall health and wellness. Nutrition affects the functioning of your major organs, blood pressure, risk of disease and more.

Heart Health
Eating foods that are high in saturated fats and cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors for heart disease, including your family?s medical history. He or she can help you design a diet plan to decrease foods that increase your risk and increase foods that help fight heart disease, such as leafy green vegetables.

Blood Pressure
If you have high blood pressure (hypertension), the right nutrition can help you control your condition. For example, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet encourages controlled meal portions, reduced sodium, and increased portions of foods rich in calcium, potassium and magnesium. The DASH diet may reduce your blood pressure by a few points in as little as two weeks.

Disease
An unbalanced diet lacking key nutrition or high in sodium or saturated fats can increase your risk of serious diseases such as diabetes or cancer. If you already suffer from a disease or condition, certain foods can either exacerbate or help your symptoms and overall health.

Weight
Being either overweight or underweight can lead to serious health complications. If your weight veers toward either extreme, talk to your doctor about developing a diet plan to help you achieve and manage a healthier weight. Being overweight can increase your risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other diseases. Being underweight can increase your risk of heart failure and stroke as well as oral and digestive problems.

Nutrition is just one part of your overall health and wellness. Other important factors include fitness and exercise, posture, and ergonomics. Heathrow Chiropractic in Lake Mary is committed to improving your overall health and wellness through such services as nutritional counseling, massage therapy, and physical therapy for auto or sports injury. (AP) ? Michael Phelps barely qualified in the 400-meter individual medley on the opening day of Olympic swimming Saturday, squeaking into the final by seven-hundredths of a second.

"That one didn't feel too good," he said.

Phelps wasn't the only surprise of the morning at the Aquatics Centre, where Queen Elizabeth appeared briefly.

Olympic champion Park Tae-hwan of South Korea won his 400 freestyle heat, but was disqualified for a false start. Paul Biedermann of Germany, the world record holder in the event, failed to make the final.

"That's the Olympics," said Canadian Ryan Cochrane, who barely made the 400 free final. "It's always a surprise, every single heat. You just have to focus on your own race."

Phelps, the two-time defending Olympic champion, won his 400 IM preliminary heat in 4 minutes, 13.33 seconds with a time that was well off his world record of 4:03.84 set four years ago in Beijing, when Phelps won a record eight gold medals.

But it was only good enough to secure the last spot in the evening final, when Phelps will swim in Lane 8 instead of the middle of the pool.

"The only thing that matters is just getting a spot in," he said. "You can't win the gold medal from the morning."

In the 400 IM, Kosuke Hagino of Japan led the way in 4:10.01, a national record. Chad le Clos of South Africa was second at 4:12.24, and Ryan Lochte of the United States advanced in third at 4:12.35.

Phelps' time was just fast enough to keep Laszlo Cseh of Hungary, the silver medalist in Beijing, out of the final. Cseh was ninth overall after leading Phelps during their heat before the American closed on the last lap of freestyle to beat him to the wall.

"I didn't expect those guys to go that fast in their heat," Phelps said. "I was slower this morning than I was four years ago."

Phelps' time in the grueling event that he had vowed not to swim again after Beijing took some of the luster off what was expected to be a showdown between him and Lochte for gold.

"You can't count him out," Lochte said of Phelps. "Even though he just squeaked in eighth, he's a racer. We're going to do everything we can to go 1-2 tonight."

Lochte, the bronze medalist in Beijing, has won the 400 IM at the last two world championships.

"My first race is always the worst one," he said. "I'm glad I got the cobwebs out."

Dana Vollmer had the fastest qualifying time in the 100 butterfly at 56.25 seconds, setting American and Olympic records, to lead 16 women into the evening semifinals.

"I'm really happy with how fast it was and I think it's only going to get faster," she said. "That's kind of a confidence-booster. I'm ready to go."

Lu Ying of China was second in 57.17 and Australian Alicia Coutts was third at 57.36. Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, the world record holder, was fourth at 57.45.

American Claire Donahue moved on in seventh, while British teammates Francesca Hall and Ellen Gandy were eighth and ninth.

Jess Schipper of Australia, the bronze medalist four years ago, was 24th and missed the semifinals by eight spots.

In the 400 free, Sun Yang of China qualified fastest in 3:45.07. American Peter Vanderkaay was second at 3:45.80, followed by his teammates Conor Dwyer in 3:46.24.

Park was surprised by his DQ, saying, "I don't know why" after he walked off the deck. In Beijing, he became South Korea's first swimming gold medalist and then won the world title in Shanghai last year.

Biedermann washed out for the second straight Olympics. He didn't make it out of the heats in Beijing. He set the world record at the 2009 world meet in Rome at the height of the high-tech body suit craze. Those suits have since been banned.

Analysis: Evidence for climate extremes, costs, gets more local

OSLO | Fri Jul 27, 2012 9:00am EDT

OSLO (Reuters) - Scientists are finding evidence that man-made climate change has raised the risks of individual weather events, such as floods or heatwaves, marking a big step towards pinpointing local costs and ways to adapt to freak conditions.

"We're seeing a great deal of progress in attributing a human fingerprint to the probability of particular events or series of events," said Christopher Field, co-chairman of a U.N. report due in 2014 about the impacts of climate change.

Experts have long blamed a build-up of greenhouse gas emissions for raising worldwide temperatures and causing desertification, floods, droughts, heatwaves, more powerful storms and rising sea levels.

But until recently they have said that naturally very hot, wet, cold, dry or windy weather might explain any single extreme event, like the current drought in the United States or a rare melt of ice in Greenland in July.

But for some extremes, that is now changing.

A study this month, for instance, showed that greenhouse gas emissions had raised the chances of the severe heatwave in Texas in 2011 and unusual heat in Britain in late 2011. Other studies of extremes are under way.

Growing evidence that the dice are loaded towards ever more severe local weather may make it easier for experts to explain global warming to the public, pin down costs and guide investments in everything from roads to flood defenses.

"One of the ironies of climate change is that we have more papers published on the costs of climate change in 2100 than we have published on the costs today. I think that is ridiculous," said Myles Allen, head of climate research at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute.

"We can't (work out current costs) without being able to make the link to extreme weather," he said. "And once you've worked out how much it costs that raises the question of who is going to pay."

Industrialized nations agree they should take the lead in cutting emissions since they have burnt fossil fuels, which release greenhouse gases, since the Industrial Revolution. But they oppose the idea of liability for damage.

Almost 200 nations have agreed to work out a new deal by the end of 2015 to combat climate change, after repeated setbacks. China, the United States and India are now the top national emitters of greenhouse gases.

Field, Professor of Biology and Environmental Earth System Science at the University of Stanford, said that the goal was to carry out studies of extreme weather events almost immediately after they happen, helping expose the risks.

"Everybody who needs to make decisions about the future - things like building codes, infrastructure planning, insurance - can take advantage of the fact that the risks are changing but we have a lot of influence over what those risks are."

FLOODS

Another report last year indicated that floods 12 years ago in Britain - among the countries most easily studied because of it has long records - were made more likely by warming. And climate shifts also reduced the risks of flooding in 2001.

Previously, the European heatwave of 2003 that killed perhaps 70,000 people was the only extreme where scientists had discerned a human fingerprint. In 2004, they said that global warming had at least doubled the risks of such unusual heat.

The new statistical reviews are difficult because they have to tease out the impact of greenhouse gases from natural variations, such as periodic El Nino warmings of the Pacific, sun-dimming volcanic dust or shifts in the sun's output.

So far, extreme heat is the easiest to link to global warming after a research initiative led by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the British Meteorological Office.

"Heatwaves are easier to attribute than heavy rainfall, and drought is very difficult given evidence for large droughts in the past," said Gabriele Hegerl of the University of Edinburgh.

Scientists often liken climate change to loading dice to get more sixes, or a baseball player on steroids who hits more home runs. That is now going to the local from the global scale.

Field said climate science would always include doubt since weather is chaotic. It is not as certain as physics, where scientists could this month express 99.999 percent certainty they had detected the Higgs boson elementary particle.

"This new attribution science is showing the power of our understanding, but it also illustrates where the limits are," he said.

A report by Field's U.N. group last year showed that more weather extremes that can be linked to greenhouse warming, such as the number of high temperature extremes and the fact that the rising fraction of rainfall falls in downpours.

But scientists warn against going too far in blaming climate change for extreme events.

Unprecedented floods in Thailand last year, for instance, that caused $45 billion in damage according to a World Bank estimate, were caused by people hemming in rivers and raising water levels rather than by climate change, a study showed.

"We have to be a bit cautious about blaming it all on climate change," Peter Stott, head of climate monitoring and attribution at the Met Office's Hadley Centre, said of extremes in 2012.

Taken together, many extremes are a sign of overall change.

"If you look all over the world, we have a great disastrous drought in North America ... you have the same situation in the Mediterranean... If you look at all the extremes together you can say that these are indicators of global warming," said Friedrich-Wilhelm Gerstengabe, a professor at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

The first robot that mimics the water striders' jumping abilities

The first bio-inspired microrobot capable of not just walking on water like the water strider but continuously jumping up and down like a real water strider now is a reality. Scientists reported development of the agile microrobot, which could use its jumping ability to avoid obstacles on reconnaissance or other missions, in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

Qinmin Pan and colleagues explain that scientists have reported a number of advances toward tiny robots that can walk on water. Such robots could skim across lakes and other bodies of water to monitor water quality or act as tiny spies. However, even the most advanced designs including one from Pan's team last year can only walk on water. Pan notes that real water striders actually leap. Making a jumping robot is difficult because the downward force needed to propel it into the air usually pushes the legs through the water's surface. Pan's group looked for novel mechanisms and materials to build a true water-striding robot.

Using porous, super water-repellant nickel foam to fabricate the three supporting and two jumping legs, the group made a robot that could leap more than 5.5 inches, despite weighing as much as 1,100 water striders. In experiments, the robot could jump nearly 14 inches forward more than twice its own length leaving the water at about 3.6 miles per hour. The authors report that the ability to leap will make the bio-inspired microrobot more agile and better able to avoid obstacles it encounters on the water's surface.
