TOKYO (AP) ? Toyota has bounced back from safety recalls and natural disasters to retake the crown as the world's top automaker from General Motors.
The Japanese automaker says it sold 4.97 million vehicles globally in the first half of the year. That's 300,000 more than GM's 4.67 million. Both companies released their numbers on Wednesday.
The lead will make it difficult for GM to catch Toyota in the second half of the year.
Toyota's numbers show that it has recovered from last year's earthquake and flooding and a series of embarrassing safety recalls.
GM says its sales will grow as it revamps 70 percent of its U.S. model lineup in the next two years.
