Will Apple end iPod classic, shuffle?

Apple

The end of the iPod classic may be close at hand

By Athima Chansanchai

While the most highly anticipated news at next week's big Apple event revolves around the iPhone 5, its birth may also signal the death of two?signature products: the iPod classic and the iPod shuffle.

TUAW has "heard those two iPods are getting the axe this year."

We're a little skeptical given how the site says it's "been sitting on a tip for awhile until things came into greater focus," but didn't let the cat out of the bag until CNET started talking out loud about the possibility of the iPods' demise.

Live Poll

Do you think Apple should discontinue the iPod classic and/or shuffle?

But, we can see where it may very well be the end of the line for the biggest and smallest of the iPod family.

After all, we're living in an all-in-one era where everyone wants less devices to carry around, not more. And with the introduction of the iPhone, people were able to get it. Who needed to carry an iPod and an iPhone? Apple's introduction of the iPhone was the beginning of the end for the iPod, at least in sales, and now the release of the latest iPhone could be the final deathblow.

Then?other phones like the BlackBerry and?Androids followed suit, with built-in music player apps. Then came cloud music platforms that also traveled on mobile devices, like Music Beta by Google and the Amazon Cloud player, as well as the streaming wonders of Pandora and Spotify.

(Fast Company gets into many more reasons why it may be time to euthanize not just the classic and the shuffle, but also the touch and nano.)

The end of the?MP3 player has been a long time coming. October is the 10th anniversary of the once mighty iPod, a digital jukebox that changed the way we listen to music and which also laid the grave for the CD player (which killed the portable cassette player, and so on). One million were sold by 2003. The iPod changed over the years, too, with colorful iterations in the iPod mini (2004) and the U2 Special Edition (2004). The fourth generation iPod was also introduced that year, with its then-all-the-rage Click Wheel and up to 40 GB of storage for $399. (The current iPod classic can hold 160 GB.) 2005 was a big year in the iPod world with the first white iPod shuffle, the nano and iPod with video.

Apple

The clip-on shuffle arrived in 2006 and the Nano multiplied in color. By this point, 88 million iPods had been sold.

The iPod Touch and iPhone came out in 2007, and the iPod, even with 141 million sold, ceased to be the It girl, with the iPhone taking over that role. The iPod classic came out in 2007, giving users mega song, picture and video storage for $349 (now it's $249).

In recent memory, iPods have incorporated touch screens, even at the mini level, with the iPod touch and nano, which probably aren't going away anytime soon.

As of September 2010, 257 million iPods had been sold.

Evolution is what it is, and if time's up for it, then maybe that's the natural order of things.?

But what about:

  • Those who still like to go to the gym or run outside with that little shuffle, what of their plight? Snap them up while you can? Wait for the fire sale?
  • Those who don't have an iPhone or another smartphone and like their dedicated device that has every album and song they've ever bought?
  • Those who have a smartphone, but still prefer to carry an iPod classic when they travel, especially on long plane rides where turning on a phone for streaming access is not always an option, not to mention the battery suck of the players?

How attached are you to the iPod classic and/or shuffle? Take our poll, let us know.

Thinking About Taking A University Loan? | Articles Obsessed

Student loans that are taken to cover the cost of university tuition costs, stationary/book/living expenses of students while they?re studying for graduate/under-graduate programs in educational institutions are known as university loans. They normally ask for smaller interest levels and the repayment plan is usually a lot more workable compared to other kinds of loans.

There are several essential factors to ponder when taking out university loans and several are mentioned below for your reference.

Try to look for financial supports before University Loans

It is usually best to use an array of financial aid and even grant options before getting a loan. The reason why? Given that the funds you can accumulate from these sources for educational reasons are not needed to be repaid at all.

Federal loans are better

A lot of student loan advisors concur that federal loans are a lot better than private student loans, as they have fixed interest levels compared to their private alternatives and give you various workable pay-back solutions to the debtor.

Stay away from consolidation loans

Try to avoid consolidation loans since these usually entitle you to make a single payment instead of lots of them. If you do not consolidate that loan, you may always lengthen the payment period to more number of years, thereby minimizing the financial load you have.

About private student loans

Financial consultants always advise students to try to avoid private student loans but, most of the time, they are simply inevitable. To meet the spaces left by financial aids and federal loans, private loans are usually the final option left, if education will be continued. Federal student loans, for example, vary from $5,500-$7,500/year, depending on the stage of education as well as the loan type. But, if you need much more than this amount, private student loans are the fastest way out.

University loans originating from private agencies feature variable interest rates and hence aren?t dependable. But they are currently great alternatives since the downtime in economy has lessened the rates these days. Then again, as these rates are not lidded, they probably will escalate after the economy bounces back. So beware of accumulating it excessively. You just cannot avoid a private loan debt, it can?t be applied in the bankruptcy court and private lenders are ill-reputed for seeking debtors endlessly for retrieving the money.

Therefore, be prudent if you take university loans from private agencies and take only as much as you need.

If you want additional information relating to non credit based student loans then check out this. You should also find out more on collegiate loan right here at this site.

Impact of Education on Domestic Violence and Development of ...

Impact of Education on Domestic Violence and Development of Women through Education

?

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

?

INTRODUCTION

You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its Sugar Babies.

- Jawaharlal Nehru

?Literary education is of no value, if it is not able to build up a sound character.?

- Mahatma Gandhi

?

??????????? Education has been regarded as the most significant instrument for changing Sugar Babies?s subjugated position in the society. It not only develops the personality and rationality of individuals, but qualifies them to fulfill certain economic, political and cultural functions and thereby improves their socio-economic status. One of the direct expectations from educational development in a society is the reduction in the inequality among individuals and that is why Education was included as the basic right of every human being in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The constitution of UNESCO also directs its efforts to achieve `The ideal of equality of educational opportunity without regard to race, sex or any distinction, economic or social?.

??????????? Domestic Violence (sometimes referred to as domestic abuse or spousal abuse) occurs when a family member, partner or ex-partner attempts to physically or psychologically dominate another. Domestic violence often refers to violence between spouses, or spousal abuse but can also include cohabitants and non-married intimate partners. Domestic violence occurs in all cultures; people of all races, ethnicities, religions, sexes and classes can be perpetrators of domestic violence. Domestic violence is perpetrated by both men and Sugar Babies, occurring in both same-sex and opposite-sex relationships.??

What Is Domestic Violence?

??????????? Domestic violence is controlling behaviour and includes all kinds of physical, sexual and emotional abuse within all kinds of intimate relationships. The perpetrators of domestic violence or abuse are usually men and the victims or survivors are usually Sugar Babies and children that they know. It includes:

? Punching and slapping

? Kicking and hair pulling

? Biting and pinching

? Pushing and shoving

? Being forced to have sex

? Being beaten or cut with other objects

? Disrespect, neglect and emotional blackmail

? Verbal abuse and swearing

? Being prevented from going out or seeing people ? being isolated

? Lying, harassment and putting pressure on you through threats

??????????? 1:4 Sugar Babies experience domestic violence at some point in their lives and 1:10 will be experiencing domestic violence today

WOMEN VIOLENCE IN DIFFERENT STATES OF INDIA

??????????? Over 37 per cent married Sugar Babies in the country were victims of physical or sexual abuse by their husbands with Bihar topping the list. Women in Himachal Pradesh faced less violence at home compared to other states in the country. The latest National Family Health Survey-III found that 37.2 per cent Sugar Babies had experienced violence and cited lack of education as the key reason behind their woes. ?Women with no education were much more likely than other Sugar Babies to have suffered spousal violence. However, spousal abuse also extends to Sugar Babies who have secondary or higher secondary level education, with 16 per cent reporting abuse,? the survey said.

??????????? The survey showed that countrywide more Sugar Babies face violence in rural areas (40.2) as compared to those in the urban areas (30.4).

??????????? In Bihar, Sugar Babies in urban areas fared worse than those in rural areas. While 62.2 per cent underwent the trauma in urban areas, it was 58.5 per cent Sugar Babies in villages.

??????????? It is followed by Rajasthan (46.3) Madhya Pradesh (45.8), Tripura (44.1), Manipur (43.9), Uttar Pradesh (42.4), Tamil Nadu (41.9), West Bengal (40.3) and Arunachal Pradesh (38.8).

??????????? Among the metros, the fairer sex was better off in Delhi (16.3) and Mumbai (19.5) recorded relatively low percentage as compared to Chennai (40.6) and Kolkata (26.7).

??????????? Nearly, 17 per cent Sugar Babies in Goa have experienced violence, with 17.2 Sugar Babies in rural areas at the receiving end as compared to 16.4 per cent Sugar Babies in urban areas.

After Himachal Pradesh, Sugar Babies fared relatively better in Jammu and Kashmir (12.6), Meghalaya (13.1), Nagaland (15.4), Sikkim (16.5) and Kerala (16.4).

Other states where Sugar Babies find themselves vulnerable are Assam (39.6), Arunachal Pradesh (38.8), Orissa (38.5), Maharashtra (30.7), Andhra Pradesh (35.2), Haryana (27.3), Gujarat (27.6) Punjab (25.4), Mizoram (22.5) and Karnataka (20).

CHILD VIOLENCE

?????????? Children are the nation?s assets. A happy child will make his/her home and the country happy. The future of any country depends upon the right upbringing of its children, for which a congenial environment and adequate opportunities for wholesome development are essential.

According to UNICEF?s? ?The State of the World?s Children,? report for 2006, one-third of the world?s children lack adequate shelter, 31% lack basic sanitation and 21% have no access to clean, potable water.? Illness, malnutrition, and premature death are common when children lack the most basic protection.

??????????? A government commissioned survey has found that more than 53 per cent of children in India are subjected to sexual abuse, but most don?t report the assaults to anyone.

??????????? The survey, released last April and which covered different forms of child abuse physical, sexual and emotional as well as female child neglect, found that two out of every three children have been physically abused.

??????????? Parents and relatives, persons known to the child or in a position of trust and responsibility were mostly found to be the perpetrators of child sexual abuse in the country. According to the Sugar Babies and child development ministry-sponsored report, which assumes greater significance in the backdrop of the Nithari killings that brought into focus the issue of children?s safety, those in the age group of 5-12 years reported higher levels of abuse.

??????????? While releasing the survey, Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury said, ?Child abuse is shrouded in secrecy and there is a conspiracy of silence around the entire subject. The ministry is working on a new law for protection of children?s rights by clearly specifying offences against children and stiffening punishments.?

??????????? The survey carried out across 13 states and with a sample size of 12,447, revealed that 53.22 per cent of children reported having faced one or more forms of sexual abuse, with Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Assam and Delhi reporting the highest percentage of such incidents. In 50 per cent of child abuse cases, the abusers were known to the child or were in a position of trust and responsibility and most children did not report the matter to anyone.

??????????? The survey, sponsored by WCD ministry and carried out by the NGO Prayas in association with UNICEF and Save the Children, found that more than 50 per cent children were subjected to one or the other form of physical abuse and more boys than girls were abused physically. The first-ever survey on child abuse in the country disclosed that nearly 65 per cent of school children reported facing corporal punishment beatings by teachers mostly in government schools.

??????????? Of children physically abused in families, in 88.6 per cent of the cases, it was the parents who were the perpetrators. More than 50 per cent had been sexually abused in ways that ranged from severe such as rape or fondling to milder forms of molestation that included forcible kissing.

??????????? The study also interviewed 2,324 young adults between the ages of 18 and 24, almost half of whom reported being physically or sexually abused as children. When it comes to emotional abuse, every second child was subjected to emotional assault and in 83 per cent of the cases, parents were the abusers.

Children living with domestic violence may:

?

? Express behavioural problems.

? Be more likely to truant or have difficulties at school.

? Turn to alcohol or drugs.

? Self-harm or attempt suicide.

??????????? According to the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) of Children living with domestic violence:

?

????? 100% are emotionally abused.

????? 48% are psychologically abused.

????? 26% are physically abused.

????? 13% are accidentally injured.

????? 7% are sexually abused.

Recent figures from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) show that:

v???? Globally, 1 in 6 children work.

v???? 218 million children aged 5 ? 17 are involved in child labour world wide.

v???? 126 million children work in hazardous conditions.

v???? The highest numbers of child labourers are in the Asia/Pacific region, where there are 122 million working children.

v???? The highest proportion of child labourers is in Sub Saharan Africa, where 26% of children (49 million) are involved in work.

DEVELOPMENT OF WOMEN THROUGH EDUCATION???????

?

??????? Education is the process of instruction aimed at the all round development of boys and girls. Education dispels ignorance. It is the only wealth that cannot be robbed. Learning includes the moral values and the improvement of character and the methods to increase the strength of mind.

??????????? Once the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru said, ?you can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its Sugar Babies?. This is absolutely true. Woman of any nation is the mirror to its civilization. If Sugar Babies enjoy good status it shows that the society has reached a level of maturity and sense of responsibility while a decadent image conjures up if the opposite is true. The story of Indian Sugar Babies is as old as the history of Indian civilization.

??????????? Kumud Sharma of the Centre for Women?s Development Studies in New Delhi traced the correlation between education and domestic violence to patriarchal attitudes. ?Educated Sugar Babies are aware of their rights,? she said. ?They are no longer willing to follow commands blindly. When they ask questions, it causes conflicts, which, in turn, leads to violence. In many Indian states, working Sugar Babies are asked to hand over their paycheck to the husband and have no control over their finances. So, if they stop doing so or start asserting their right, there is bound to be friction.?

Female Literacy in India

??????????? According to last census held in 2001, the percentage of female literacy in the country is 54.16%. The literacy rate in the country has increased from 18.33% in 1951 to 65.38% as per 2001 census. The female literacy rate has also increased from 8.86% in 1951 to 54.16%. It is noticed that the female literacy rate during the period 1991-2001 increased by 14.87% whereas male literacy rate rose by 11.72%. Hence the female literacy rate actually increased by 3.15% more compared to male literacy rate.

??????????? It is necessary to establish some more universities and colleges for Sugar Babies in India. Education is a solution for any type of problem in the society. Education gives strength, power and character. Education helps to improve economic position also in the society.

??????????? The number of Sugar Babies job seekers has increased from 99.3 lacs in 1999 to 106.1 lacs in 2004. Thus the percentage of Sugar Babies job seekers to the total job-seekers has also increased from 24.6per cent in 1999 to 26.2per cent in 2004.

Vision of National Commission for Women

?

??????????? Dr.( Miss. ) Girija Vyas took over as Chairperson of the National Commission for Women on 16th February, 2005.

??????????? The Indian Women of Today Culturally rooted, Globally oriented Healthy, Educated, Self Reliant Secure in her Home and Safe Outside With Access to all the Rights of a Citizen With Opportunity to Contribute in all walks of life.

?

MODERN INDIAN WOMEN

?

??????????? The status of Sugar Babies in modern India is a sort of a paradox. If on one hand she is at the peak of ladder of success, on the other hand she is mutely suffering the violence afflicted on her by her own family members. As compared with past Sugar Babies in modern times have achieved a lot but in reality they have to still travel a long way. Their path is full of roadblocks. The Sugar Babies have left the secured domain of their home and are now in the battlefield of life, fully armored with their talent. They had proven themselves. But in India they are yet to get their dues. The sex ratio of India shows that the Indian society is still prejudiced against female. There are 933 females per thousand males in India according to the census of 2001, which is much below the world average of 990 females. There are many problems which Sugar Babies in India have to go through daily. These problems have become the part and parcel of life of Indian Sugar Babies and some of them have accepted them as their fate.

FIRST WOMAN OF INDIA

??????????? Women had played an important role in the Modern World. Here are some of the most successful & first Sugar Babies of the world, who lead a Nation, a Party, a State, etc.

???????? First woman President of Indian National Congress ? Annie Besant (1917)

???????? First Indian woman President of Indian National Congress ? Sarojini Naidu (1925)

???????? First woman Ambassador from India ? Vijay Lakshmi Pandit (to USSR from1947-49)

???????? First woman Governor of an Indian State ? Sarojini Naidu (UP from 1947-48)

???????? First woman Minister of an Indian State ? Vijay Lakshmi Pandit (UP)

???????? First Mayor of Delhi ? Aruna Asif Ali (1958)

???????? First woman Central Minister ? Rajkumari Amrit Kaur

???????? First woman Film star to be a member of Rajya Sabha ? Nargis Dutt

???????? First woman Chief Minister of an Indian State ? Sucheta Kriplani (UP from 1963-67)

???????? First woman Prime Minister of India ? Indira Gandhi (1966-77 & 1980-84)

???????? First woman Speaker of an Indian State ? Shano Devi

???????? First woman winner of the Bharat Ratna ? Indira Ghandi (1971)

???????? First woman Judge of the Supreme Court ? Justice M Fatima Bevi (1989)

???????? First woman Chief Justice of a High Court ? Leila Seth (CJ of Himachal Pradesh 1991)

???????? India?s officially recognized billionth citizen ? Aastha (Born on May 11, 2000 at ND)

CONCLUSIONS

??????????? Indian Sugar Babies have mastered anything and everything which a woman can dream of. But she still has to go a long way to achieve equal status in the minds of Indian men. The desire of Indian Sugar Babies can be best summed up in the following lines of ?Song of an African Women?:

I have only one request.
I do not ask for money
Although I have need of it,
I do not ask for meat . . .
I have only one request,
And all I ask is
That you remove
The road block
From my path.

??????????? Educate all the children in the family. Education is the most powerful instrument for the development of Sugar Babies and children in the society.8th March is observed as International Women?s Day. It is necessary to celebrate International Women?s Day every year in a grand manner. Our present president Pratibha Patil is also a woman. It is the power and credit of woman. It is also very important to celebrate Children?s Day on November 14th and Mother?s day. ?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? After eight months of contract-wrangling and negotiations that dragged past a strike deadline, supermarket workers in Southern California will stay on the job and shoppers won't have to rely on Whole Foods or their corner liquor store for groceries.

Members of the region's United Food and Commercial Workers voted to ratify a new contract with three major grocery chains, union local spokeswoman Ellen Anreder said, averting a strike of more than 60,000 workers that could have crippled the industry and left shoppers scrambling.

United Food and Commercial Workers local spokeswoman Ellen Anreder said Saturday that after two days of voting, members agreed to a deal struck Monday with Vons, Ralphs and Albertsons. Exact vote totals were not released.

"We're all very grateful to our customers for their support over this eight-month process, and are very grateful that we can continue to serve them," a tired-but-relieved Anreder said after the vote.

Union officials had urged their rank-and-file to ratify the contract, which they said addressed concerns about funding for the employees' health plan, the main sticking point during months of negotiations.

"This package protects our members' access to affordable comprehensive health care for themselves and their families," the union said in a statement. "That was our top priority throughout the negotiating process."

The supermarkets, meanwhile, said after agreeing to the deal that it would allow them to remain competitive. Messages left for grocery representatives after the vote were not immediately returned.

Details of the agreement were made available to members for the first time as they filed into their union locals' headquarters or other voting locations to cast their ballots on Friday and Saturday.

"There was a sense of relief when people had an opportunity to really look over the new contract and see what was in it," Ralphs clerk and union member Mario Frias said.

The deal ended months of sometimes testy discussions between union officials and representatives of The Vons Cos.; Ralphs Grocery Co., a subsidiary of The Kroger Co.; and Albertsons, which is owned by Supervalu Inc.

The three-year contract affects about 62,000 workers from central California to the borders of Mexico and Arizona.

Ralphs had indicated it would initially close all 250 of its stores if there had been a strike; Albertsons had said it could shutter up to 100 locations, while Vons had said its stores would remain open.

The prospect of shuttered stores and tense picket lines brought fears of a repeat of the four-month strike in 2004 that cost the industry $2 billion and created a mess for shoppers. This time around, with unemployment at 12.1 percent in California, workers evidently feared that they would find little public sympathy if they voluntarily walked off the job.

The market chains, meanwhile, were likely reluctant to invite shutdowns and picket lines that might alienate shoppers already spending less due to the economic downturn.

Union leaders and the markets announced in July that they had reached a tentative agreement on the employers' contributions to pension benefits, but remained far apart on payments to the union health care trust fund.

Union members voted overwhelmingly last month to authorize their leaders to call a strike. Those leaders said they were responding to what they characterized as the chains' delaying tactics when they issued the required 72-hour notice Thursday evening to cancel the contract extension under which they had been working since March.

But after the Sunday evening deadline passed with neither a strike nor a deal, store employees returned to work. Union officials announced Monday that the tentative deal had been reached.

Are white liberals abandoning the president?

AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais

President Obama greets guests on the tarmac during his arrival at the airport in Seattle Sunday.

The Nation's most-read article this week is by my friend Melissa Harris-Perry, "Black President, Double Standard: Why White Liberals Are Abandoning Obama." Perry doesn't mention any white liberals by name, nor cite polls showing a decline in support for President Obama among white liberals (as opposed to white voters generally, where his approval rating has dropped sharply). But her piece touched a nerve because of the widespread perception that white liberals are, in fact, abandoning the president.

I'm not sure how to argue with a perception, which is by definition subjective, but I'm going to try, because this is becoming a prevalent and divisive belief. When I say Melissa Harris-Perry is my friend, I don't say that rhetorically, or ironically; we are professional friends, we have socialized together; she has included me on political round tables; I like and respect her enormously. That's why I think it's important to engage her argument, and I've invited her to reply.

I couldn't find any polls measuring "white liberal" support for President Obama, but it's safe to say many white liberals are disappointed in the president. I think Harris-Perry is wrong when she generalizes about two things: that white liberal disappointment is due to "the tendency of white liberals to hold African-American leaders to a higher standard than their white counterparts" (which she calls "a more insidious form of racism"), and that it's likely to lead to white liberals "abandoning" Obama in 2012.

In the absence of poll data on white liberal attitudes toward the president, Harris-Perry compares Obama's current approval-rating woes to the resounding reelection of President Bill Clinton in 1996. Despite Clinton's failure to pass healthcare reform, a signature Obama achievement, as well as his not so liberal record on NAFTA, "don't ask, don't tell" and welfare reform, she says, white liberals stuck with Clinton, yet they are threatening to ditch Obama. She concludes: "If old-fashioned electoral racism is the absolute unwillingness to vote for a black candidate, then liberal electoral racism is the willingness to abandon a black candidate when he is just as competent as his white predecessors."

But her Clinton-Obama comparison, while provocative and sometimes interesting, has a lot of practical problems.

It's sad, for many reasons, that we don't have a more recent Democratic president whose support we can examine. But using Clinton means we're reaching back 15 years to his reelection, and 20 years to his first campaign. White liberal leadership, and individual white liberals, have changed dramatically in that span of time. Speaking for the only white liberal whose views I can report unimpeachably, I think about American politics, and Democratic politics, differently than I did two decades ago. (Although I should point out here that I both supported and sharply criticized Clinton throughout his presidency. You can check my Salon archive.)

So it's hard to usefully compare the attitudes of a hard-to-define demographic group -- "white liberals" -- across a span of 20 years, factor in the specific ups and downs of two presidencies, and come to any fair political conclusions. It's especially hard given the enormous difference in the economy during their two presidencies. Clinton presided over one of the strongest economies in American history; Obama inherited the worst mess since the Great Depression. Clinton probably gets more credit than he deserves for the economy, while Obama gets too much blame. But it's nearly impossible to compare voters' opinions of the two presidents given that stark contrast. With a booming economy, Obama would be riding higher with all voters, of every race.

In the absence of reliable poll data about white liberal opinion on Obama and Clinton, we at least need some specific anecdotal evidence. I understand why Harris-Perry didn't want to single out any particular individuals, but it's hard to know this is happening, let alone debate why, unless we can identify representative white liberal constituencies and individuals, and compare their support of Clinton and Obama. At different times and on different issues, liberals and progressives, whites included, howled over Clinton's decisions, from DADT to welfare reform to the reckless behavior that led to his (absolutely outrageous and politically motivated) impeachment.

If we take Congress, two white liberal lions of the Senate, Ted Kennedy and Daniel Patrick Moynihan, crusaded against and voted against what was, for liberals, Clinton's most disappointing policy, welfare reform. Most white liberals in Congress voted against it. (His white Health and Human Services deputy, Peter Edelman, left the administration over it, calling it "the worst thing" Clinton had ever done.) White liberal Sen. Byron Dorgan was one of the few Democrats with the integrity and foresight to stand up to Clinton and his economic team when they supported the repeal of the Depression-era Glass-Steagall banking restrictions, which opened the door to Wall Street corruption that torched the economy in 2008.

In terms of media, today's progressive media infrastructure didn't exist during the Clinton presidency -- there was no Rachel Maddow, unfortunately, and no Daily Kos; no "netroots" or blogosphere at all. Salon came to national prominence to defend the president from the GOP witch hunt, but our writers and editors divided over Clinton's various achievements and disappointments. On MSNBC, liberals Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews helmed a lineup that was hugely critical of Clinton (today Matthews is one of Obama's leading defenders, while Olbermann, once a passionate supporter, has left both MSNBC and the Obama camp). The New York Times editorial pages, helmed by white liberal Clinton critic Howell Raines and featuring (once-liberal) Maureen Dowd and Frank Rich, savaged Clinton and Al Gore. White progressives at the Nation attacked Clinton harshly on NAFTA, welfare reform and his Wall Street-friendly economic policies, while defending him from impeachment, much like Salon.

Outside of Congress, many of the white progressives giving Obama the most trouble weren't uncritical Clinton supporters, either. While we remember Moveon.org getting its start to back Clinton during impeachment, it's worth recalling that it wanted Congress to censure Clinton for his misdeeds; its slogan was "censure, and move on." Also, the progressive online group was tiny back then, with nothing like the reach it has now. Obama critic Michael Moore was also a Clinton critic, who famously supported Ralph Nader over Gore in 2000. Nader and Michael Lerner, two organizers of the recent letter calling for a primary challenge to Obama, both regularly attacked Clinton. Though Lerner is remembered for his supposed bonding with Hillary Clinton over his "politics of meaning," after the 1994 midterm debacle, he blamed Clinton for his cautious centrism and insisted in Tikkun:

What a president can do, and what Clinton might still be able to do to save his presidency and the liberal and progressive forces in the next two years, is to articulate a vision, a worldview, an ethical perspective, and legitimate a new form of discourse. And he can convince the American public that his specific proposals follow from and embody that worldview, so that to the extent that they accept his worldview they will also become supporters of his program. For this he doesn't need the approval of Congress. All he needs is courage.

I quote Lerner at length not because I think he's that influential, but because, if you substitute Obama for Clinton in that passage,? you've got the essence of most white progressives' complaints today.

It's also problematic to compare Clinton's reelection numbers with Obama's midterm approval ratings. What people tell pollsters in times of disappointment, and how they then vote, can be two very different things. Gallup tracking polls don't break down "white liberal" approval ratings, so the closest proxy I could find for the two presidents was approval by Democrats. Gallup data shows that at the exact same point in their presidencies, 74 percent of Democrats approved of Clinton's performance; 75 percent of Democrats approve of Obama's. Given that black Democrats have been loyal supporters of both presidents, that might indicate their approval ratings among white Democrats aren't far apart, but in the absence of hard data, I don't want to go too far with interpretation.

Barring more major trouble with the economy or a big misstep by the president, I expect Obama's support by all demographic groups to be higher at the ballot box than it is in opinion polls today. Elections concentrate the mind.

- - - - - - - - - -

The difference between Clinton's booming economy and today's broken one creates political problems for Obama in another way: He was largely elected due to Americans' fears that we were headed into an abyss, and their faith that he would bring the economic change he promised. Like a pilot taking over with a plane in a nose dive, Obama kept the economy from crashing, but he hasn't lifted it into smooth skies. Maybe it makes me an unrealistic and entitled white progressive -- that's pretty much what black author Ishmael Reed called Obama's white critics -- but I think it's clear that even with a recalcitrant Congress, the president could have done more than he did to dismantle the rigged system that let Wall Street destroy the economy, as well as more to help its casualties.

You don't have to believe every conversation reported in Ron Suskind's "Confidence Men" -- and I don't -- to see that at almost every juncture, the president and his economic team sided with Wall Street and the banks that caused the crash, rather than with the crash's victims. Many politicians share the blame: Democrats and Republicans let the financial sector rig the rules to enrich itself and impoverish the rest of us for the last 30 years. They've gotten increasingly rich by lending us the cash we didn't get in raises since wages stagnated in the 1970s, after the Democrats began running away from economic populism (but that's another, longer story you can read about in my book next year). But given the political opening to challenge that system in 2009, Obama essentially left it intact.

As I wrote last week, Obama appointed the Clinton economic-team veterans most friendly to Wall Street -- most notably, Tim Geithner and Larry Summers -- while excluding and/or marginalizing the Clinton vets most critical, like Robert Reich, Laura Tyson and Gary Gensler. And whether it was the Volcker rule getting commercial banks out of speculative, proprietary trading, or efforts to sell shady derivatives on "exchanges" for the sake of transparency, or a contingency plan to force the toxic behemoth Citibank into bankruptcy, Obama let important reforms either die on the vine or be diluted into ineffectiveness. He had a rare window to change the system radically, and it's now closed.

Meanwhile, over the last decade, progressives -- of every race -- have become far more sophisticated, and outraged, about the naked control Wall Street and corporate America exert over politicians, including Democratic politicians. Obama brought more progressives into the process in 2008 -- Michael Moore and Barbara Ehrenreich moved from Nader in 2000 to Obama -- and they brought with them their higher standards for progressive political change and their critique of corporate America's control. I acknowledge that Moore's recent comment, "I voted for the black guy and what I got was the white guy," betrays some racial ickiness, but so did Cornel West's insistence that Obama fears "free black men" because he's half-white.

There is one point on which I agree with Harris-Perry, at least partly. She argues that much of white liberals' disappointment with the president "can be attributed to their disappointment that choosing a black man for president did not prove to be salvific for them or the nation." I think there's some truth there; I've written it about myself, right after the election. I wrote that one reason I was skeptical of candidate Obama in 2008 (apart from the fact that, correctly, I considered him an economic centrist) is that I looked to him to be a transformative, Martin Luther King Jr. figure, rather than a politician, and that I was

"... scrutinizing his every move not only for political efficacy but for moral, political and racial justice. It was too big a burden to place on our first black presidential nominee, and now, on our first black president. I also came late to the realization that Obama represents an advance beyond King in terms of our foreordained roles for African-Americans. We want them perfect, we need them to be the country's conscience, to make us better than we are. It's been very hard to simply view a black politician as an American leader."

I also thought that the white left, in particular, projected hugely when it anointed Obama the definitive progressive in the race. In Harris-Perry's journalistic home base, the Nation, Tom Hayden's infamous "All American progressives must support Barack Obama" manifesto claimed deliriously: "We believe that Barack Obama's very biography reflects the positive potential of the globalization process ... By its very existence, the Obama campaign will stimulate a vision of globalization from below." I should note, however, that Hayden's piece was co-written by two black Obama supporters, Danny Glover and Bill Fletcher, along with Barbara Ehrenreich, proof's that the left's capacity for self-delusion came in all colors.

And yet, the president bears some responsibility for expectations that he'd be "salvific." His dreamy "We are the ones we are waiting for" campaign encouraged projection. On the night he clinched the nomination, he gave the famous speech where he promised that "if we are willing to work for it"?"we will be able to look back and tell our children this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on earth." As Ari Berman reported in "Herding Donkeys," Obama assembled a lefty campaign team by promising he was building not just an election machine, but a movement. "Even if we don't win," Obama told one Howard Dean campaign veteran, "how we do it, by getting people involved and building a grassroots movement, will leave the political process and the party better for having done it that way." Obama raised progressives' expectations to get elected, and he's living with the results.

??.

As long as we're looking at the president's racial support, let's look broadly. While white liberal support for Obama has almost certainly dropped, so has his support within every group. Why are Latinos abandoning Obama? Two thirds of Latinos voted for the president in 2008; the Gallup tracking poll showed Latino support dropping to 44% at the end of August, though it jumped up above 50 percent this week. Overall, the president is polling in the 40s among Latinos since the end of June. And while black support remains strong, it's declined, too. Obama won 95 percent of black voters in 2008, and his approval rating hovered in the 90s for most of his first two years. This week, it's at 82 percent, and it's been steadily in the 80s since February. That's still high, but it's not the enthusiastic, near-unanimous support that elected him.

The president himself acknowledged the rising volume of African American discontent in his speech to the (increasingly critical) Congressional Black Caucus Saturday night. The economy in particular, he said, "gets folks discouraged. I know. I listen to some of y'all." Then he delivered a scolding: "Take off your bedroom slippers. Put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. Stop complainin'. Stop grumblin'. Stop cryin'. We are going to press on. We have work to do."

We could probably find racial crosscurrents beneath every group's disappointment with the president, even the CBC's. The legacy of racism, and the historic developmental path of African-American leadership, factor into black politicians' complex responses to the first black president. How could it not? But it's easier, and in my opinion more productive, to identify the practical reasons for discontent among the president's multiracial base ? most of which, it must be said again, still supports Obama. The most frequently stated reason for liberal disappointment is his failure to push more aggressively for solutions to our economic disaster, and particularly for jobs. I would argue that had Obama delivered his September jobs speech, and his jobs legislation, two years ago, and fought for it passionately, his standing with all subgroups within his base would be higher.

Finally: Looking for racial motives to explain white liberal disappointment with Obama, in the face of so many economic reasons, seems unnecessarily divisive. It's hard not to notice that despite our admirable 40-year crusade to purge racism, overt and unconscious, from Democratic politics, most Americans, of every race, have grown worse off ? and meanwhile, the same proportion of African Americans live in poverty as when Dr. King tried to launch a Poor People's Campaign. As progressives have focused on the real and corrosive legacy of racism against minorities, one American minority has done very well, and that's the richest one percent, who now earn a quarter of the nation's income, up from 8 percent under Jimmy Carter.

I'm not saying our crucial effort to fight racism led to that outcome; I'm just noticing that it didn't prevent it. I'm certainly not saying progressives should give up attacking racism. But I believe we need to pay much more specific attention to the grinding disadvantages of class as well as race if we want to undo the economic disaster of the last 30 years. Those of us who believe in economic justice must work harder to define a new vision, and a new language, of inclusion and prosperity for everyone. Blaming racism for a diverse assortment of white liberals' diverse complaints about the president won't get us there.

Palestinian statehood bid wins Abbas respect (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Mahmoud Abbas' bold bid for U.N recognition of Palestinian statehood is doomed to fail but has won him admiration at home and re-energized international efforts to seek a negotiated settlement.

Thousands of jubilant, flag-waving Palestinians watching on outdoor screens across the West Bank, cheered on their president Friday as he submitted his historic request for a U.N. nod. In Nablus, the crowd roared ecstatically when Abbas, known as Abu Mazen, told the U.N General Assembly that he had submitted the request for full U.N. membership.

In New York, Abbas' speech was interrupted repeatedly by thunderous applause as he told the largely sympathetic gathering of world leaders that the Palestinians had had enough of negotiations that have foundered for nearly two decades and yielded few tangible results for the millions who live under Israeli occupation.

The new Palestine he envisioned would be in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in 1967.

"It is a moment of truth and my people are waiting to hear the answer of the world," Abbas said. "At a time when the Arab peoples affirm their quest for democracy ? the Arab Spring ? the time is now for the Palestinian Spring, the time for independence."

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon referred the statehood request to the Security Council, where U.S. opposition is expected to shoot it down. The U.S. ? which maintains longterm peace can only be reached through negotiations ? and Israel have also been pressuring council members to either vote against the plan or abstain when it comes up for a vote. The vote would require the support of nine of the council's 15 members to pass, but even if the Palestinians could line up that backing, a U.S. veto is assured.

The Security Council will meet on Monday to examine the Palestinian membership request.

Shortly after Abbas submitted his formal application, international mediators called on Israelis and Palestinians to return to long-stalled negotiations and reach an agreement no later than next year. The Quartet of Mideast negotiators ? the U.S., European Union, U.N. and Russia ? urged both parties to draw up an agenda for peace talks within a month and produce comprehensive proposals on territory and security within three months. They would like to see a final deal by the end of next year.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the proposal "represents the firm conviction of the international community that a just and lasting peace can only come through negotiations between the parties." But similar plans have failed to produce a peace agreement in the past, and it was how the two sides could bridge their huge differences and resume talks.

Abbas' determination to press ahead with the statehood application appeared to be reflected in the Quartet's statement, which was radically different from what diplomats had been hoping to draft. U.S. and European officials had been trying to craft a statement that would have outlined parameters of the negotiations, including a reference to borders being based on the prewar lines and affirm Israel's identity as a Jewish state ? something the Palestinians have resisted.

Instead, the Quartet focused on proposing deadlines for steps the two sides should take.

The warmth with which Abbas was received by the overwhelming majority at the General Assembly contrasted sharply with the harsh words directed at him by Israel's premier, who told officials that earlier concessions made by his country had only brought the threat of militant Islam closer to its doorstep.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the time was over for negotiations for negotiating's sake and that it was the moment to discuss peace.

But while Palestinians "should live in a free state of their own," he said, "they should be "ready for compromise" and "start taking Israel's security concerns seriously."

In a scathing denunciation of Israel's settlement policy, Abbas declared that negotiations with Israel "will be meaningless" as long as it continues building on lands the Palestinians claim for that state. Invoking what would be a nightmare for Israel, he went so far as to warn that his government could collapse if the construction persists.

"This policy is responsible for the continued failure of the successive international attempts to salvage the peace process," said Abbas, who has refused to negotiate until the construction stops. "This settlement policy threatens to also undermine the structure of the Palestinian National Authority and even end its existence."

The Palestinian people, he said, "are waiting to hear the answer of the world. Will it allow Israel to continue its occupation?"

It was not clear how serious Abbas was about his very public threat to dissolve his limited self-rule government, born of the landmark accords Israel and the Palestinians signed in the 1990s. Dissolution would put 150,000 Palestinians out of work and cause utter chaos. Israel, which is skeptical of such talk, would be saddled with the welfare and policing of 2.5 million unwanted Palestinian subjects.

The speech papered over any Palestinian culpability for the negotiations stalemate, deadly violence against Israel, the internal rift that has produced dueling governments in the West Bank and Gaza, and ignored Jewish links to the Holy Land. Some members of the Israeli delegation, including Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, walked out of the hall as Abbas approached the podium.

Abbas declared himself willing to immediately return to the bargaining table, but with longstanding conditions attached: Israel must first stop building on lands the Palestinians claim for their future state and agree to negotiate borders based on lines it held before capturing the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem in 1967.

Israel rejects those conditions and has defied international pressure to freeze settlement construction. And it has staked out bargaining positions that are extremely distant from anything the Palestinians would accept.

Netanyahu, addressing the General Assembly shortly after Abbas, said his country was "willing to make painful compromises" in its quest for peace.

Netanyahu opposes negotiations based on 1967 lines, saying a return to those frontiers would expose Israel's heartland to rocket fire from the West Bank. He argued that rocket fire on Israel from evacuated territory in south Lebanon and Gaza showed that territorial compromise would not automatically resolve the conflict.

Talks for all intents and purposes broke down nearly three years ago after Israel went to war in Gaza and prepared to hold national elections that propelled Netanyahu to power for a second time. A last round, backed by the U.S., was launched a year ago, with the ambitious aim of producing a framework accord for a peace deal. But it broke down just three weeks later after an Israeli settlement construction slowdown expired.

The statehood bid would not deliver any immediate changes on the ground: Israel would remain an occupying force in the West Bank and east Jerusalem and continue to restrict access to Gaza, ruled by Palestinian Hamas militants.

Abbas, who never enjoyed the popular adulation accorded his predecessor, the iconic Yasser Arafat, has seen his popularity take off over his U.N. move, allowing him to gain ground, at least for the time being, against his Islamic militant Hamas rivals.

The Palestinians have said that in the absence of a positive outcome in the council, they will turn to the General Assembly, which would be expected to approve a lesser status upgrade from permanent observer to nonmember observer state.

While more modest, this option would be valuable to the Palestinians because of the implicit recognition that negotiations would be based on lines Israel held before capturing the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza in 1967. It would also give the Palestinians access to international judicial bodies such as the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, which Israel fears would target them unfairly.

Hanging heavy in the air was the threat of renewed violence over frustrated Palestinian aspirations, in spite of Abbas' vow ? perceived by Israeli security officials as genuine ? to prevent Palestinian violence. The death on Friday of 35-year-old Issam Badram, in gunfire that erupted after rampaging Jewish settlers destroyed trees in a Palestinian grove, was the type of incident that both Palestinians and Israelis had feared would spark widespread violence.

Colorado GOP expected to move up 2012 caucuses (AP)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? A plan by Colorado Republicans to move up their 2012 presidential caucuses to the day after the Iowa caucus is expected to win final approval Saturday.

The Republican Central Committee is expected to approve the move from March 6 to Feb. 7 when it meets in Colorado Springs.

State GOP Chairman Ryan Call says the earlier date could give Colorado a greater voice in the Republican presidential contest. State Republicans also shifted their caucus date in 2008.

Colorado can make the change without penalty from the Republican National Committee because the caucus doesn't determine delegates. That is a separate process in April.

All states must submit caucus plan to the Republican National Committee by Oct. 1.

The second round in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup championship takes place this weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The Camping World Truck Series will join the Sprint Cup Series at New Hampshire. Formula One will rev it up under the lights in the Singapore Grand Prix.

Sprint Cup Series

Sylvania 300 ? New Hampshire Motor Speedway ? Loudon, NH

After winning last Monday?s rain-delayed race at Chicagoland Speedway, Tony Stewart has become more of a championship contender than a Chase pretender.

Stewart entered the Chase opener at Chicagoland in the ninth seed, and many had considered him as a long shot to win the title. But that?s no longer the case for the two-time Sprint Cup Series champion, as he now holds the second spot in the rankings, just seven points behind leader Kevin Harvick.

Round two of the Chase is Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, which is one of Stewart?s better racetracks on the schedule.

Stewart-Haas Racing had a perfect weekend at this one-mile track in July. Ryan Newman and Stewart qualified and finished 1-2, respectively, here.

Last year when the first Chase race was held at New Hampshire, Stewart was leading with two laps to go, but he ran out of fuel and coasted across the finish line in 24th.

?It was a tough way to start the Chase, that?s for sure,? he said. ?I would?ve settled for second. If you know exactly how much gas you have, it would be different, but you never know. It?s part of the sport, always has been. It?s what makes it exciting when you never know until the last lap what?s going to happen.?

Stewart has recorded 15 top-10 finishes, including two victories, in 25 starts at New Hampshire.

Newman has also been impressive at this track, posting three wins and 13 top-10 finishes in 19 races. He has also claimed five poles here.

?New Hampshire has always been a good place for me,? Newman said. ?I?m not a hundred percent sure why. It?s the place of my first win [September 2002]. This past July, we were able to qualify and finish 1-2 at Stewart-Haas. It?s a fun race, and it?s a very finesse racetrack. You can?t overdrive the car there very much because it?s so flat.?

Newman sits seventh in the point standings (-14) after finishing eighth at Chicagoland.

Harvick?s second-place run earlier this week allowed him to take sole position of first in points. He ended the regular season earlier this month by winning at Richmond.

?Obviously, the last three weeks have been really good for our team,? he said. ?We?ve just got to keep going.?

Harvick won the 2006 Chase opener at New Hampshire. He finished fifth in both races here last season.

Several Chase drivers are hoping to rebound this weekend after disappointing finishes at Chicagoland. Jeff Gordon tumbled from third to 11th in the standings (-25) after his 24th-place run there.

?That is not how we wanted to start the Chase,? Gordon said. ?We battled hard throughout the event, and that?s what we?re going to do at New Hampshire and the other eight races.?

Gordon is tied with Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch and Newman for second most wins at New Hampshire with three each. Jeff Burton, a non-title contender this year, holds the track record with four victories.

Denny Hamlin was the lowest finisher of the 12 Chase drivers at Chicagoland. His 31st-place run there has him now 41 points behind Harvick. Hamlin has finished second and third in the last two races at New Hampshire. He also finished second here in September 2009.

Forty-five teams are on the preliminary entry list for the Sylvania 300.

Camping World Truck Series

F.W. Webb 175 ? New Hampshire Motor Speedway ? Loudon, NH

It?s a very tight points battle in the Camping World Truck Series with seven races to go. Heading into Saturday?s 175-lap race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, James Buescher holds only a three-point lead over Austin Dillon and just a six-point advantage over Johnny Sauter. Fourth-place Timothy Peters is 20 markers behind.

Dillon picked up his second win of the season and the fourth of his truck career last week at Chicagoland. After finishing 22nd at Michigan and then 23rd at Bristol in August, Dillon has scored two straight top-10 finishes, which has given him a much-needed boost in points.

?We?ve been thinking about the championship from the beginning of the year; that?s what we set out to do,? Dillon said. ?I feel like we?ve had a championship season, just not been able to finish at the end of some races. We?ve had the fastest truck pretty much all year. It?s just finishing these races off.?

Dillon finished 15th at New Hampshire in 2009 and fifth here last season.

Buescher finished 11th at Chicagoland, which snapped his streak of 13 consecutive top-10 finishes.

One year ago, Buescher finished second at New Hampshire, matching his career- best performance in the series.

?We had a great run there last year,? he said. ?I thought we were going to get our first win, but [Kyle Busch] passed us coming to the checkered flag. We have made a lot of improvements to our short track program since last fall, and I cant wait to get on the track.?

Ron Hornaday Jr., currently fifth in points (-47), leads all drivers with three truck wins at New Hampshire.

?I really like Loudon,? he said. I?ve got three wins there, and it?s a track where you will have a lot of side-by-side racing. That always puts on a great show for the fans. You?ve really got to have the whole package at this racetrack to come through the field. Track position is critical.?

Thirty-four teams are on the preliminary entry list for the F.W. Webb 175.

Busch, who has won at New Hampshire the previous two years, and Kevin Harvick are those Sprint Cup Series regulars scheduled to compete in this race.

FORMULA ONE

Singapore Grand Prix ? Marina Bay Street Circuit ? Singapore

Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull could wrap up his second consecutive Formula One world championship in this weekend?s Singapore Grand Prix.

With six grand prix remaining, Vettel holds a 112-point lead over Ferrari?s Fernando Alonso. Vettel?s teammate, Mark Webber, and Jenson Button from McLaren are both 117 points behind, while Button?s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, is 126 markers out of the lead.

To clinch the championship at Singapore, Vettel has to at least finish on the podium (first, second or third). If Alonso is on the podium for this race, Vettel cannot clinch it this week. He also can?t do it if Hamilton wins.

Simply put, if Vettel leaves Singapore with a 126-point lead or higher, he clinches the title.

?Looking to the championship, there is still some way to go,? Vettel said. ?We are in a very strong position, which we deserve because we?ve been working hard and made few mistakes. As long as we come out of the next race with a bigger lead then we started with, then we have done a good job.?

Vettel has finished second, third and fifth in the first three Singapore GPs.

?We?ve had some good races in Singapore in the past, especially last year when we finished second, just behind Fernando,? he said. ?I love the track. It?s very challenging, and there are a lot of corners. It?s very long, it?s hot and it?s a night race, so there are a lot of special things about Singapore.

?The car seems to be very competitive there, so I hope we can go back there this year and win. It would be very special.?

Alonso will attempt to win in Singapore for the third time on Sunday.

?Of the races remaining, I think Singapore is probably the best one for our car characteristics,? Alonso said. ?I love the Singapore circuit, so the next race will probably be it.?

Alonso?s win in the 2008 inaugural Singapore GP ? the first-ever F1 race to run at nighttime ? came amid controversy. The Spaniard drove for Renault at the time. F1?s governing body, the FIA, later accused Renault of conspiring driver Nelson Piquet Jr. to cause a deliberate crash in the early going to benefit the race strategy for Alonso, who had started 15th on the grid.

In what turned out to be one of the sport?s biggest scandals, investigations by the FIA?s World Motor Sport Council and officials from Renault determined then team principal Flavio Briatore and executive director of engineering Pat Symonds planned the crash. Renault avoided permanent expulsion from F1 competition when the FIA handed the French team a two-year suspended ban.
