Medicare Leaves Me Scratching My Head | Pittsburgh Healthcare ...

By Kathleen Ganster

Medicare?the very word makes some people break out in a sweat. Medicare is the health insurance provided for senior citizens by the Federal Government. But there is Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and do you need Plan D? And what on earth is Medigap or Medicare Advantage?? What is up with all of these plans?

The more I researched options available under Medicare, the more confused I became and soon found myself near tears.

And I was only researching for an article, not making the important decision about my own healthcare!

As I dug through the resources, I found some that I shoved to the side (well, actually threw in the trash), others that actually helped me figure out what was what. I also talked to a few folks who have navigated the system so that I could offer you their tips as well.

Hopefully, I can explain various components of Medicare for others facing the choices and provide resources that actually helped, not befuddled me.

Please keep in mind that I can?t possibly translate every fact regarding the Medicare program in one article. Also keep in mind that health care is constantly in the news and open to change. This article is to serve as a basic starting point and guide.?

When to choose your Medicare coverage

Before you even get started on the whole Medicare process, make sure you start researching early. Most of us are eligible to start receiving these benefits at age 65. When you sign-up to receive Social Security benefits, you are essentially also registering for Medicare and will automatically start getting Part A and Part B on the first day of the month that you turn 65. That?s why you want to take care of the process BEFORE you turn 65. Three months before you turn 65, you should contact Social Security even if you are still employed.

If you are still working at 65, as many of us are these days, you can still sign-up for Medicare by contacting 1-800-877-1213 or www.medicare.gov/MedicareElibigility.

You should also make sure that you take care of choosing your healthcare when you turn 65, or when you retire or you may have to wait until Open Enrollment which is October 15 to December 7, 2012.

Also be aware that your benefits may change if you move?even within the state.

Medicare Plan A

Medicare Plan A and B are the components of healthcare for those 65 and older provided by the Federal Government. Almost everyone age 65 and older is eligible for Medicare Plan A. Some citizens are actually eligible earlier, for example, if you are on disability.? But the majority of us are eligible at 65 and most of us receive these benefits for free.

Medicare Plan A is often called the ?hospital insurance? ? inpatient hospital or skilled nursing costs, hospice services and home health care services. Now while you may have this coverage for free, you may still have to pay for copayments, deductibles and coinsurance.

Again, most people will not have to pay for this coverage.

Plan B?

Unlike Plan A, you will have to pay some fee for this part of your coverage, but the fees can be automatically deducted from your Social Security benefits. If you or your spouse are still employed, your current health care plan may be a better plan ? find out from your employer. If you chose a supplemental health care program, that program may also cover your Plan B services. Ask your healthcare provider.?

Everyone does need to be enrolled in Plan B which covers your outpatient services. These are often things that are considered preventative medical services as well such as routine doctor?s visits, lab work, tests, etc. You will want to ask your doctors if the accept Medicare. Not all doctors do ? ASK.

Plan C ? Medicare Advantage Plan

We all know that health care also includes dental and eye care. Adding a supplemental insurance policy can save you money in the long run. There are numerous providers for Plan C and it combines Plan A, Plan B and often Plan D.

Plan D ? Prescription Drug Plan

Many supplemental health care programs include some sort of prescription drug coverage. You may also just need to add a Plan D (that you pay for yourself) to a health care program that you may receive as part of your retirement benefits. This is also called a Medigap program.

It is important to note, if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan you don?t need a Medigap policy.

With all of the above plans, you may also have to pay a co-pay and have a deductable. Like everything else, ask questions to see what those costs may be.

Valuable Resources

Joe Bertucci and his wife, Pat, relied on the human resources personnel at his former company when he planned on retiring.

?They were extremely helpful and explained everything. I found out that I had to apply for Plan B (they were already on Plan A from when they had turned 65), before I could be eligible for my company?s retirement health benefits,? he said.

Fortunately, Joe had planned far enough in advance that everything was lined up before his retirement, but Pat did make a run to the Butler County Social Security Office ? the couple lives in Cranberry ? to make sure the process was complete.

?They gave us papers that we could use in case we needed something before our ?official? cards came in the mail,? said Bertucci.

Watching the videos on YouTube produced by http://www.youtube.com/user/medicaremadeclear gave me a starting place.

Visiting the website www.medicare.gov produced by the federal government helped me further research options and answered a lot of my questions.

A booklet ?Medicare & You 2012? produced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and available by calling 1-800-783-7067 was very valuable and presented information in a very easy-to-read fashion. I was able to leaf through the booklet to flush out information I obtained from other sources including friends.

There are also services offered through your county offices. In Allegheny County, the Agency on Aging can provide various resources at www.alleghenycounty.us or 1-800-344-4319. They do not answer questions, but have some publications online.

The APPRISE line does have counselors that can answer questions but you may have to leave a message for them to call you back. Their number is 1-800-344-4319. It took them 24 hours to call me back, but they were very helpful and will answer your questions.

Summary

Navigating the Medicare healthcare system can be tricky. Try not to get overwhelmed ? like I did ? and seek out additional help to explain the various parts and services covered.? The number one tip that I would offer is ASK QUESTIONS. Don?t be ashamed to ask questions and if necessary, get a friend or loved one involved to be a second set of ears and eyes. This is your healthcare we are talking about ? nothing is more important.

Nas Chose Producers Who Were 'Gonna Be There' For Life Is Good

Salaam Remi, No I.D., Heavy D and Da Internz all worked with Esco on his upcoming LP.

Throughout his career, Nas has worked with some of the most celebrated hip-hop producers from Dr. Dre and DJ Premier to the Trackmasters and Swizz Beatz, but for his next LP, Esco chose to keep the vibe more intimate.

"I wanted to work on a record where it's just not a lot of people," Nas said when he appeared on "RapFix Live" on Wednesday. "So it's mostly No I.D., Saalam Remi, Da Internz; those are the ones who basically gave me the music. They knew what I wanted; they sat with me."

On 2001's Stillmatic, Remi contributed the beat for "What Goes Around" and then came back the next year to give Esco two singles for his God's Son LP ("Made You Look" and "I Can"). No I.D. and Nas have some history as well. In 2007, the Nasty one hopped on the No I.D.-produced cut "Success" off of Jay-Z's American Gangster album, and late last year, Nas, Common and the Chicago producer collaborated on "Ghetto Dreams."

"I needed producers that's gonna be there and get into what I want to get into, have the conversation and start making the records based off of what I'm looking for," God's Son said.

Heavy D also lent a production hand prior to his death last year, making the beat for Life is Good's latest single, "The Don." Nas didn't find out the Heavy sent the music for him to use until after he died however. "I looked up to Heav," he said. "He's an icon, a music icon."

What are your expectations for Nas' Life is Good? Tell us in the comments!

Case-Shiller Shows Uneven Recovery For U.S. Housing | Mortgage ...

Case-Shiller Home Value Changes

Recent data suggests that the U.S. housing market is in recovery. However, the data also shows this to be an uneven recovery.

According to the monthly S&P/Case-Shiller Index, for example, home values rose in three of 20 tracked markets between December 2011 and January 2012. 17 tracked markets showed home prices still in decline.

It?s easy to point to the Case-Shiller Index as evidence that the housing market in Florida has yet to bottom, but we have to consider the Case-Shiller Index?s shortcomings ? specifically in a recovering economy.

For example, the Case-Shiller Index is based on changes in home prices of a single home, through successive sales. This means that to calculate its home price index, the Case-Shiller searches for sales of the same home over a period of time and calculates the difference in contract price.?

This methodology can distort the home price tracker downward during times of weak economy because there is no distinction made for homes sold in foreclosure or as a short sale.

35% of all homes sold in January were ?distressed?, says the National Association of REALTORS?.

Another distortion in the Case-Shiller Index is that the model neglects all home types that are not of type ?single-family residence?. This means that multi-unit homes and condominiums are excluded from the Case-Shiller Index model.

In some markets, such as Chicago and New York City, condominiums account for a large percentage of overall sales.?

Lastly, the Case-Shiller Index is published with a ?lag?, which renders it useless to buyers and sellers of Orlando in search of real-time, relevant data. The most recent Case-Shiller Index is published with a 60-day delay, and accounts for home purchase contracts written between October and December 2011.

Since October, the U.S. economy has added more than 1 million jobs and the economy has moved into ?moderate expansion?, according to the Federal Reserve. Data that?s two seasons old does little to help us today.

Making sound real estate decisions is about having timely, relevant data at-hand when it?s needed. The Case-Shiller Index fails in that respect. It?s good for highlighting the U.S. housing market on the whole, as it existed in the past. For real-time market data, though, you?ll want to talk with an active real estate agent.

More Patent Legal Woes: T-Mobile Sued By OTI Over Use Of NFC in ...

11-T-Mobile-HTC-Amaze-4G

Here we go again: today brings another mobile patent infringement suit ? this time against T-Mobile USA, and over a technology that has had very little use to date, but a lot of potential.

On Track Innovations says that the carrier is selling two handset models ? the HTC Amaze 4G, Nokia Astound ? that it claims violate a patent owned by OTI. NFC is the technology that is the centerpiece for a number of contactless mobile payments services and data sharing other applications.

The case was filed today in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, OTI says.

OTI says that it holds some 100 patents ? both approved and pending applications ? covering a pretty wide range of areas, from NFC and other contactless payments technologies, to secure ID, and? ?petroleum and parking solutions.?

OTI has been enforcing its patents already and says it has signed a licensing deal ?multibillion dollar? corporation, covering a different patent for contactless smart SIM cards. It doesn?t specify the name of the company.

?We believe in the strength and value of our intellectual property and have the resources to protect it,? Oded Bashan, chief executive of Rosh Pina, Israel-based OTI, said in a statement.

OTI says that its technology is supported by MasterCard and Visa. Among the products it sells itself are NFC devices and readers, including a product, the?COPNI (Contactless Payment and NFC Insert), that can be attached to a phone to make it NFC-capable, even if it does not have an NFC chip built into the device itself.

Although some companies like Google, Nokia and RIM have committed to implementing NFC, there are others that have not and some have seen these ?bolt-on? solutions as one way forward to speed up usage and adoption.

We are contacting T-Mobile for a comment and will update this story as we learn more.

Moosejaw's New CEO Talks Retail Future | Skiing Business

Moosejaw, known by most as an online outdoor retailer, recently named Eoin Comerford as it?s new president and chief executive officer. Coming from his role as the company?s marketing and technology senior vice president, it?s no surprise he?ll continue to push the retailer to be at the forefront of technology.

Besides opening new brick-and-mortar stores around the country, Moosejaw is rolling out a mobile POS system that enables its floor employees to make sales without customers going to a desk full of cash registers.

Skiing Business caught up with Comerford to find out more about his technology goals, brick-and-mortar strategy and his vision for the future.

Eoin Comerford, Moosejaw president and CEO

Eoin Comerford, Moosejaw president and CEO

Where do you plan on taking the company now that you?re in control of its wheel?
To a degree it?ll be much of the same. I was second in command before and pretty much ran the e-commerce side of the business-which is the largest part. Certainly my passion is around the brands and consumers we work with as well as expanding Moosejaw?s presence.

But I?m also a techie guy, so this stuff around the mobile site, mobile POS and social media will continue to get a ton of attention and we?ll continue to be a leader in that space.

It really comes down to being the most fun outdoor retailer on the planet. I really believe that and want to bring that to people. We want them to visit our brick-and-mortar stores even when they don?t want to buy anything. It?s not just a job for me. It?s a passion.

You guys have been putting more emphasis on brick-and-mortar stores. How many do you have, and what?s your strategy there?
We?ll be opening our 9th store in May (in Boulder, Colo.). We opened our 8th store earlier this month near Boston, and then we?ll open our 10th in Kansas City in September. We want to be in key markets where we can have a bigger presence, and build a physical presence. We?ll first look at markets where we have a big online customer base, and when we are ready to launch in a specific market, we reach out to our customers there to see what activities they do, what they want to see in the store and even what they want to see for a grand opening.

We really want to expand our overall presence, and there are generally two ways to do that: with advertising and more stores. We don?t have a huge ad budget, and we?d rather expand our physical footprint. Still, brick-and-mortar is only about 20 percent of our business right now. It might get to about 30 percent, but not reach 50 percent anytime soon.

What markets are you looking to for future expansion?
I can?t tell you where we?re looking, but you can probably figure most of them out. We?re big into outerwear, so it doesn?t make sense for us to be in warm climates like Florida anytime soon. We?re looking at colder climates like the Northeast, Midwest and Northwest for sure.

Moosejaw mobile POS

The stores you?re opening are pretty high-tech. Talk about what you?re doing there and how it?s changing the face of retail.
It?s a new prototype for us. We?ve always been pretty leading edge on the website, but we?re taking it to a new level in the store, and it starts with the layout.

We think shopping in a store should be a good, fun experience. We?re hanging TVs in the store that stream customers? pictures and displaying social media posts. We have the dressing rooms in the middle of the store, so they are easier to access and people can try on clothes and show their friends. And we have our products displayed in strategic areas around the store that make sense to shoppers.

We?ve also done away with the standard cashiers desk that you see when you walk in, and replaced them with mobile POS systems that our employees carry. It?s basically an iPod Touch that?s cradled in a device that also has a barcode scanner and credit card swiper. A store these sizes, with our old POS system, would have required four POS units. Now, we have two units and three handheld POS units.

It saves money, but it?s more about allowing our employees to better engage customers. They can also check inventory on the spot, look up products that we only sell online, and be a better asset to our shoppers.

What?s the feedback been?
We?ve had great feedback from customers and employees. We set a goal to run 50 percent of our in-store orders through the mobile units, and it?s at about 36 percent and increasing as our employees become more comfortable with it. The customers love it too. It?s a talking point if nothing else.

My favorite story is of a woman who came into our Ann Arbor, Mich. Store looking at two pieces of clothing. She bought one via the mobile POS, but we later got a call that she wanted the other one. However, she said she had her kids with her and didn?t want to come into the store. She asked if we could get the item, bring it out to her car as she was parked out front, and do the transaction right there. We did.

Do you see that drive-thru approach gaining momentum?
We talked about doing it more as a stunt this past Christmas. But, because we had only debuted it a couple months before that at our Michigan stores, we weren?t ready to roll it out. Now that we have it up and running, we may do it for Christmas this year. It could be a great thing for those guys who forgot to get their significant other something and need to make a quick purchase and then get back to the house.

I don?t think you?ll get rid of cash registers though, because you still need them for cash transactions.

moosejawmarquee

What?s the investment?
It depends on what options you want. Square is a pretty affordable option that anyone can use with an iPad, iPhone or Android phone. There are other affordable options like that, which allow you to process credit cards, but they don?t link to your inventory system. It?s definitely becoming more mainstream.

For us, though, we integrated ours with our POS system and everything is tied together. But really, cost will depend on what type of program you use, how tied together you want your system to be and how many POS terminals you have.

You guys also have a full mobile e-com site. What advice do you have for other retailers thinking about taking that leap?
We had a mobile site back in 2006, but that was before smart phones were so popular. Then we created a smart phone mobile site, but we found out that it was hard integrating that with our regular website in terms of online shopping and inventory. So we created a site that?s flexible. It automatically knows if you?re on a mobile phone and it switches over to a different layout, but it?s essentially the same website that you?d pull up on your desk computer.

In terms of tips, the first and foremost piece of advice is to create a mobile site of some sort. You absolutely need to have a mobile option or you?ll lose customers. Mobile is only about 10 percent of our traffic, but you could potentially lose that 10 percent if you don?t have a site that works on mobile phones.

Sometimes people just want to check a product?s price, add something to a wish list or look up features. They don?t always want to buy, so if that?s what?s stopping a shop from having a mobile site, then don?t have the e-commerce feature.

Experiments

ok so i have this idea for a role play about people who are injected with animals genes, animals of all kinds:

Basically they are captured against their will and are injected with this experimental drug that forces you to turn into an animal. You will still be part human but they can force the change whenever they want untill you figure out how to do it yourself (which wouldn't happen for awhile). They would basically keep us in almost an old prison setting but every once in awhile they will knock us out putting us is a holographic room where you can actually interect with objects in the room. Say there is a tree, well instead of your hand passing threw it you would be able to climb it.

But thats all I really have so far, no actual story just the basic outline. If you're interested let me know and if you have any ideas feel free to post them or pm me ^,..,^

'Dancing with the Stars': Who Are the Early Favorites?

Two weeks in, here's what we know about Dancing with the Stars, season 14. It may be lacking in star power, but it's strong on skill. The premiere show was the highest scored first episode ever. And while the second week's scores (for dancing the jive and quickstep) weren't as record-breaking, three of the couples continue to dominate the dance floor. Here are the early frontrunners:

High blood sugar lowers chances of surviving a heart attack

ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2012) ? Patients with high blood sugar run an increased risk of dying if they have a heart attack, and diabetics are less likely to survive in-hospital cardiac arrest than non-diabetics, reveals research at the Sahlgrenska Academy, at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Diabetes is common among patients with coronary artery disease, and this is a potentially lethal combination: a thesis from the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy reveals that diabetes in coronary artery disease patients brings a significantly increased risk of premature death.

Smaller chance of surviving

Doctoral student and researcher Petur Petursson investigated the connection between blood sugar disorders and survival following heart attacks and cardiac arrest. His thesis shows that patients with diabetes have a smaller chance of surviving in-hospital cardiac arrest. Diabetes and pre-diabetes are also associated with a less favourable prognosis following coronary artery surgery.

"Type 2 diabetics with suspected coronary artery disease who are on insulin therapy have lower survival," he explains. "We've not been able to demonstrate the exact cause, but much of it may be because those on insulin therapy have more severe disease."

Need for careful management

Petur Petursson says that the results underline the need for careful management of patients with coronary artery disease and the importance of accurately diagnosing and managing blood sugar disorders.

"Medical personnel can pretty much assume that coronary artery disease patients will have some kind of blood sugar disorder, so there must be established strategies for managing these disorders at every heart clinic in the country."

The thesis Aspects of Abnormal Glucose Regulation in Various Manifestations of Coronary Artery Disease was defended on 23 February.

'Titanic' director James Cameron dives to Earth's deepest spot

Cameron is using a submarine to descend nearly seven miles to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific. The pressure below is the equivalent of three SUVs sitting on your toe.

Director James?Cameron?began his journey Sunday to someplace only two men have gone before ? to the Earth's deepest point.

The director of "Titanic," ''Avatar" and other films is using a specially designed submarine to descend nearly seven miles (11 kilometers) to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, an area 200 miles (320 kilometers) southwest of the Pacific island of Guam.

He began the dive at approximately 5:15 a.m. Monday, local time, according to Stephanie Montgomery of the National Geographic Society, where?Cameron?is an explorer-in-residence.

"RELEASE, RELEASE, RELEASE!" were the last words?Cameron?uttered before beginning the dive, according to a Twitter post from the expedition.

The scale of the trench is hard to grasp ? it's 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon and more than a mile (1.6 kilometers) deeper than Mount Everest is tall. It was expected to take?Cameron?90 minutes to reach the bottom aboard his 12-ton, lime-green sub called "Deepsea Challenger." Once there,?Cameron?planned to spend six hours collecting samples for biologists and geologists to study. The return trip to the surface was forecast to take 70 minutes.

There's considerable wiggle room built in, however, as the submarine?Cameron?helped design has the capability to support life for a 56-hour dive.

The first and only time anyone dove to these depths was in 1960. Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and US Navy Capt. Don Walsh took nearly five hours to reach the bottom and stayed just 20 minutes. They didn't have much to report on what they saw there, however, because their submarine kicked up so much sand from the ocean floor they couldn't see much.

One of the risks of a dive so deep is extreme water pressure. At 6.8 miles (10.9 kilometers) below the surface, the pressure is the equivalent of three SUVs sitting on your toe.

Cameron?told The Associated Press in an interview after a 5.1 mile (8.2 kilometer)-deep practice run near Papua New Guinea earlier this month that the pressure "is in the back of your mind." The submarine would implode in an instant if it leaked, he said.

But while he was a little apprehensive beforehand, he wasn't scared or nervous while underwater.

"When you are actually on the dive you have to trust the engineering was done right," he said.

The latest dive site, which is at the deepest point in the Mariana Trench, is named Challenger Deep after the British naval vessel HMS Challenger that used sound to first measure its depth.

The film director has been an oceanography enthusiast since childhood and has made 72 deep-sea submersible dives. Thirty-three of those dives have been to the wreckage of the Titanic, the subject of his 1997 hit film that is being released in a 3-D version next month.

Pope greeted by crowds upon arrival to Mexico

It had become tradition in Mexico. Before daybreak, youths would creep as close as security permitted and serenade their beloved Pope John Paul II with a song of greeting and celebration.

Now a new, less familiar pope had come, seeking to strengthen his own ties with the largest Spanish-speaking Catholic nation.

So well before dawn Saturday, two dozen youths from a Guadalajara church group gathered near the school where the Pope Benedict XVI was staying. "We sang with all our heart and all our force," said Maria Fernanda de Luna, a member of the group. "It gave us goosebumps to sing 'Las Mananitas' for him."

Songs, joyful throngs, church bells and confetti welcomed Benedict as he began his first trip to Mexico, a celebration that seemed to erupt spontaneously out of what had been a thin, sun-dazed crowd.

As Pope Benedict XVI's plane appeared in the shimmering heat of Friday afternoon, people poured from their homes. They packed sidewalks five and six deep, screaming ecstatically as the pope passed, waving slowly. Some burst into tears.

Many had said moments earlier that they could never love a pope as strongly as Benedict's predecessor, John Paul II. But the presence of a pope on Mexican soil touched a chord of overwhelming respect and adoration for the papacy itself, the personification for many of the Catholic Church, and God. Thousands found themselves taken aback by their own emotions.

As a girl, Celia del Rosario Escobar, 42, saw John Paul II on one of his five trips to Mexico, which brought him near-universal adoration.

"I was 12 and it's an experience that still makes a deep impression on me," she said. "I thought this would be different, but, no, the experience is the same."

"I can't speak," she murmured, pressing her hands to her chest and starting to cry.

Belief in the goodness and power of the pope runs deep in Guanajuato, the most observantly Catholic state in Mexico, a place of deep social conservatism and the wellspring of an armed uprising against harsh anti-clerical laws in the 1920s. Some in the crowd came for literal healing, a blessing from the pope's passage that would cure illness, or bring them more work. Others sought inspiration, rejuvenation of their faith, energy to be a better parent.

Popes "have a personality, a positive energy. The simple fact of seeing him is a great satisfaction," said Jose Luis Perez Daza, a 47-year-old lawyer from Mexico City who was among thousands pouring off of buses Saturday and trudging three miles (five kilometers) to a sprawling campground in the city of Silao to await Sunday's papal Mass.

"It is faith that moves us," said Alejandra Angoa, 34, a handicrafts-maker from the state of Tlaxcala. She walked alongside people of all ages carrying sleeping bags, coolers, backpacks, rolling suitcases and jugs of water to the campsite, where a festival-like feeling prevailed. Many sang or played guitars.

Many said the pope's message of peace and unity would help heal their country, traumatized by the deaths of more than 47,000 people in a drug war that has escalated during a government offensive against cartels that began more than five years ago.

In a speech on the airport tarmac shortly after arriving, Benedict said he was praying for all in need, "particularly those who suffer because of old and new rivalries, resentments and all forms of violence."

He said he had come to Mexico as a pilgrim of hope, to encourage Mexicans to "transform the present structures and events which are less than satisfactory and seem immovable or insurmountable while also helping those who do not see meaning or a future in life."

No part of Mexico has been spared at least a small scrape with drug gang violence, but Escobar said she hopes that Benedict will help turn around a society devastated by the drug trade and the brutal violence it spawns.

"I would like him to raise the consciousness of those people who are hurting Mexico, those involved in drug addiction, in the mafia," Escobar said. "I hope that we have will more respect for life."

Antonio Martinez, 57, said he wanted relief from diabetes and divine intervention that would bring him more than occasional work in Leon's shoe factories. He stood by the side of the road, resting against his bicycle, waiting for a glimpse of the pope.

"Simply greeting the pope and receiving his blessing can change our lives," Martinez said. "I believe that my health will improve, that more sources of work will appear."

The faithful lined more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) of the pope's route from the airport into Leon shouting the ultimate welcome: "Benedict, brother, you are now Mexican!"

The pope responded to the greeting as he stepped off his plane to wild cheers and the clamor of ringing bells.

"This is a proud country of hospitality, and nobody feels like a stranger in your land," Benedict said. "I knew that. Now I see it and now I feel it in my heart."

The weeklong trip to Mexico and Cuba is Benedict's first to both countries, and it will be a test of stamina for the pope, who turns 85 next month. At the airport Friday in Rome, he used a cane, apparently for the first time in public, while walking about 100 yards (meters) to the airliner's steps.

Papal aides, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Benedict has been using the cane in private for about two months because it makes him feel more secure and not for any medical reason. He left the cane aside as he stepped off the plane in Mexico.

Homeowners' emphasis on energy efficiency grows | Pro Hands at ...

(ARA) ? Even in a volatile economy, homeowners are making home upkeep a priority. While the number of projects annually had been on the decline in recent years, a study from BuildFax, a resource for building, remodeling and repair information, found remodeling activity was up in 2011 over 2010. Additional data shows homeowners are opting to invest in what matters most with projects that benefit their wallets, personal comfort and the environment.

Know the facts

Before buying anything, shoppers are taking time to learn more about the products they put in their homes. For one in four consumers, knowing and understanding what makes up general household products is important. As options continue to increase, this attention to research is key to finding efficient products that offer maximum value. For instance, homeowners will find that a few newer home insulation products that help provide greater energy efficiency also boast new sustainable formulations. Owens Corning EcoTouch insulation is made from 99 percent natural materials, contains a minimum of 58 percent recycled content and is verified formaldehyde free.

Energy-efficient essentials

According to the 2010 Home Improvement Research Institute Trends Program Report, reducing household energy usage and bills through energy-efficient improvements continues to be the No. 1 reason homeowners make home improvements. That same report also indicated six out of 10 consumers need help identifying what they can do to be more environmentally conscious.

?Now is the right time to make efficiency improvements around the home because homeowners will see an immediate impact on their monthly utility bills, and will reap even greater benefits in the long term,? says Frank O?Brien-Bernini, chief sustainability officer at Owens Corning. ?According to the U.S. Department of Energy, buildings use more energy in the United States than either transportation or industry, accounting for the consumption of 40 percent of our nation?s energy resources. On a more granular level, the primary use of energy in a home is for heating and cooling. In many homes, excessive energy is wasted through poorly sealed and insulated attics, walls and ductwork ? all problems that can be solved by handy do-it-yourselfers or through experienced contractors.?

The Home Improvement Research Institute reports roughly one in three homeowners plans to purchase more energy-efficient doors, windows or HVAC systems in the coming year. Sealing all openings around doors and windows can help homeowners make the most of their investment. Air ducts should also be inspected to ensure they are clean, are free of leaks and holes and direct air to the right spaces.

Recycling 101

While recycled content is commonly focused on, recyclable materials are also important. Often with home improvement projects, old materials are thrown out and replaced with the new. What many homeowners may not know is that many building materials and appliances are recyclable. Recycling is a better solution for the environment, and may be less costly than taking material to a landfill.

?There are more recyclable materials on and in a home than you might first assume. Millions of tons of shingles torn off from roofs end up in our country?s landfills each year. Fortunately, the technology now exists for all those shingles to be recycled instead,? says O?Brien-Bernini. ?In 2009, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC formed an alliance with Heritage Environmental Services to create a Shingle Recycling Program with roofing contractors to make recycling convenient, cost-competitive and differentiating and have since recycled more than 90,000 tons of asphalt shingles.?

Homeowners looking for more information about shingle recycling and other types of recycling can turn to Earth911.com, with whom Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC recently also formed an alliance. The site hosts the largest and most accurate recycling directory in North America and provides information about what materials can be recycled as well as lists of recyclers in local markets.

Viessmann Group to Devise Growth Strategy for Boiler Business ...

Case Type: add capacity, growth.
Consulting Firm: Siemens Management Consulting second round job interview.
Industry Coverage: industrial equipment; energy industry.

Case Interview Question #00515: The Viessmann Group is an international heating systems manufacturer headquartered in Allendorf (Eder), Germany. The company controls 23 production and project management divisions in 11 countries around the world. As of 2011 the company employs 9,600 people and reports annual sales of viessmann group boilers?1.86 billion. Viessmann Group provides an extensive range of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) products, including combined heat and power generation (CHP), heat pumps, sU.olar thermal systems, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment, etc.

You?ve been approached by the boiler division of Viessmann Group and they want you to help them devise a growth strategy. Their main goal is to increase sales and preferably profits too. How would you go about the case? What recommendations would you give to the boiler division?

Possible Answer:

Candidate: So the client is the boiler division of a large company and wants us to help develop a growth strategy to increase its sales and profits. Are there any other goals I should be aware of?

Interviewer: No, that would be all.

Candidate: Before we take a look at the company specific information, I would like to know more about the industry ? current trends, any new technological advances, nature of competition etc.

Interviewer: Boiler companies typically have a line of products based on capacity and fuel used. There are no new advances in recent times. 80% of the market is organized and the main customers are the thermal power plants.

Candidate: Hmmm. A company can grow either by expanding market share in its existing market, entering new geographical markets, coming out with new products or by acquiring another company. I would like to know more about the client company. Can you please tell me:

  • What this company?s products are
  • Who are its customers are
  • Where does it operate
  • Its access to cash/financing resources
  • Its competitors

Interviewer: It?s a medium size firm ? about Euro ?200 Million in annual sales, operates primarily in Germany. It?s the biggest player in the organized segment which is approximately 80% of total market. Its main customers are thermal power plants, etc. Products can be classified on the basis of capacity and fuel for the boilers. It doesn?t have much cash or technology. It?s a midget compared to global players in the same industry.

Candidate: Well, not being cash-rich restricts the firm from exploring various growth options. For instance, new product development seems to be out of question given no access to technology advances.

Similarly, exploring new geographical markets, even overseas markets, would be out of reach presently as there is dearth of capital. Acquiring another company is a possibility if synergies exist that can to offer significant benefits out of the merged entity. But, we also must keep in mind the results realization lag in case of a merger. Again, M&A activity presently does not seem feasible.

Interviewer: Sounds reasonable.

Candidate: Now that we have eliminated some of the options, I would like to focus on current market and consolidation of the existing product line. Specifically, I would like to know the individual products on offer, margins to be made on each of them and their individual growth potential.

Interviewer: It is a fair point. Our client presently offers boilers based on its capacity and fuel type. Typically, they get a maintenance contract for a specified time period as well. As far as the growth potential is concerned, there are quite a few captive power plants being developed currently in Germany. Additionally, there are a couple of really big power plants announced by our big customers. Margins are negotiable and depend to a great extent on the customer in question.

Candidate: I see. Given these facts, I would look at the mix of products on offer. To that effect, I would like to know the share of each of the individual product type in the sales. Post that, I would like to map each product with its growth potential, its current market share in its category and the margins to be retained.

Interviewer: I think you have figured it out. What would you like to suggest to the client company?

Candidate: In my opinion, our client should focus on the products which promise growth and also offer higher margins. Possibly, they are currently providing a standard capacity type or a fuel type to most of the customers. They should rather look at the individual customer needs and design their offer accordingly. This benefit to customer would also enable them to command a greater margin on each product sold. Sales force incentives could also be aligned with customer-centricity in terms of correct product requirement assessment and supply. In short, focusing on the right product is the key for growth for our client.

Interviewer: Great. I think the analysis is sufficiently thorough. We can stop here. Thank you.

Candidate?s Notes: I also talked about cyclic goods, i.e. boilers and other such heavy industrial goods are highly cyclic in nature, meaning that if GDP grows by an ?x? percent, the sales of these goods would go up by 5x percent, and if GDP goes down by x%, their sales would also go down by 5x%. The interviewer agreed but reminded me that there?s a lag in between GDP growth and growth of heavy industries.

Comments: One can also explore profitability of operations, possible efficiency measures, credit policies, sales force incentives.

Mysterious cloud spotted on Mars

Wayne Jaeschke

Amateur astrophotographer Wayne Jaeschke captured this image of a "terminator projection" rising up from the edge of the Martian disk at about the 1 o'clock position on March 22. The inset photo is a 200 percent enlargement of the region around the projection. For more, check out Exosky.net, Jaeschke's website.

By Alan Boyle

Amateur astronomers are puzzling over a seemingly anomalous cloud that has shown up on images of Mars taken over the past few days. Is it really a cloud, or a trick of the eye? Does it really extend 150 miles up from the surface, as some of the observers suggest? And what churned up all that stuff, anyway? The amateurs and the pros will be trying to resolve those questions before the phenomenon fades away.

"It's not completely unexpected," Jonathon Hill, a member of the team at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University, told me today. "But it's bigger than we would expect, and it's definitely something that our atmosphere guys want to take a look at."

Hill and his colleagues will be looking at the area where the cloud was spotted using the Thermal Emission Imaging System, or THEMIS, which is one of the instruments on NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter.

"In the command upload we're preparing to send today, we've included observations that will hopefully capture some of these recent clouds," Hill wrote in an email. "Our THEMIS camera on Mars Odyssey is capable of acquiring simultaneous visible and thermal infrared images, so our atmospheric researchers are pretty excited about the possibility of not only getting a good look at the cloud structures, but also their temperatures."

THEMIS will be checking out heightened cloud activity around Mars' shield volcanoes as well as around the southern site spotted by the amateurs. Pictures from a camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, called the Mars Color Imager, or MARCI, might provide further clues about the southern cloud feature. And amateur astronomers are sending out the alert for observers to keep a close watch on the Red Planet over the coming days.

There's been lots of buzz about the high-altitude cloud on Cloudy Nights and other online discussion forums for skywatchers. Sky & Telescope's Sean Walker says the puff of white was first noticed on March 20 by Wayne Jaeschke, an amateur astrophotographer from Pennsylvania. Since then, other observers have identified the feature in images going back as far as March 12.

All sorts of hypotheses have been proposed: Could it be debris kicked up by a meteoric impact? Is it a huge weather system? Is it merely a funny kind of glint caused by a combination of lighting and atmospheric conditions?

In an email, Jaeschke told me that the feature is "still there, although it has decreased in size over the past two days."

"This has led some to believe that it was some sort of transient-type event," Jaeschke said. So it's crucial to make as many observations of the area as possible over the next few days.

Wayne Jaeschke created this animated GIF image of Mars with the cloud coming into view on the upper right edge of the planet's disk. For more from Jaeschke, check out his Exosky website.

Walker says the feature is currently well-placed for viewing from the Americas. He says it should show up on the edge of Mars' disk around 1:10 a.m. ET Saturday, and 39.5 minutes later on each succeeding night. Consult the photos above for guidance on where to point a medium-size telescope ? keeping in mind that these images are inverted to appear as they would through a telescope, with south pointing "up." Arizona State University's Hill says the area in question is called Terra Cimmeria.

Observation reports should be sent via email to Richard McKim, director of the British Astronomical Association's Mars Section. (The linked website includes McKim's email address, as well as a picture of the chap.)

Solving this mystery ? if it indeed turns out to be an honest-to-goodness mystery rather than a mere quirk?? may require additional data from the big guns of the astronomy world. But in any case, the episode illustrates once again how much amateurs can contribute to uncovering the wonders of the cosmos.

"When it comes to Mars, amateurs and professionals working together give you way more insight into ongoing processes, because with so many amateurs, you're continuously monitoring changes in the planet," Hill told me. "They provide a perspective and a context that we don't usually get."
