Sharon's brain scans show leaps in science of comas

LONDON (Reuters) - The state-of-the-art brain scans that allowed doctors to look inside the head of former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon show how advances in neuroscience are forcing a rethink of what it means to be in a long-term coma.

Neurologists who performed the tests said they hinted that Sharon, who has been in a coma since suffering a stroke in 2006, may have a degree of consciousness and be able to hear sounds or make out pictures.

"It's encouraging to find these signs because it opens up the possibility of some meaningful communication," said Paul Matthews, a professor of neurology at Imperial College London.

Until recently, he said, it had been assumed that many comatose patients diagnosed as being in a "vegetative state" had no meaningful awareness of their surroundings.

Yet progress in the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanners - machines that measure brain activity by detecting changes in blood flow - and in reading the signals they give has begun to change that view.

Compared with other "vegetative state" patients who have had similar tests and been described in scientific papers, Sharon's responses were very faint, said Martin Monti, a cognitive psychologist from the University of California Los Angeles, who co-led the American-Israeli team that scanned Sharon's brain.

There is little or no likelihood of a rapid recovery by Sharon, a former general, hawkish defense chief and leader of the right-wing Likud party who suffered his stroke weeks after leaving Likud to found a centrist group to pursue peace with the Palestinians.

But with more tests and research to devise a way for him to signal whether he is processing external information, it is possible that he, like others, could one day respond to questions about his state of mind and whether he is in pain.

"If it turns out that these signals are more robust, then there's no doubt that we could use things like brain-computer interfaces (to communicate)," Monti told Reuters in an interview as he travelled from Israel back to the United States.

AWARENESS DETECTED

The science behind such possibilities has made significant advances in recent years, allowing some patients previously thought to be completely unaware to show they are in fact conscious and able - with help - to communicate.

A study published by Monti and colleagues in 2010 in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) was among the first to show how fMRI scans allowed doctors to detect awareness and communicate with patients in a long-term coma.

"The technology is still very new and we haven't by any means optimized this kind of work yet," said Steve Williams, of King's College London's centre for neuroimaging sciences.

"But if you do see something, it must give so much hope. And if you can get robust and consistent activation of the brain ... then you can take it a lot further."

The experiments use imagery tasks - such as asking a patient to imagine playing tennis or walking from room to room in their home. The fMRI scanner maps the distinctive activity of the brain when each task is performed.

The patient is then asked to equate one of the imagery tasks to the answer "yes" and another to the answer "no", and apply them to simple yes-or-no questions.

These tests "give us a lot of information about how we can contact these patients and stimulate them", said Alon Friedman, a neurological director at Israel's Soroka Medical Centre in Beersheba, who worked with Monti on Sharon's scans.

Of the 54 patients described in the NEJM study, all diagnosed as being in a vegetative or minimally conscious state, five were able to "wilfully modulate their brain activity", the researchers said, and one was able to answer yes-or-no questions during the scan.

EEG CAPS TO AID COMMUNICATION?

In the 84-year-old Sharon's case, evidence that he was able to perform the imagery tasks "was there but was not as strong as we have seen in other patients", Monti said.

"We're very cautious. There is a little evidence that he might have been doing some of the things we asked of him, but it was extremely weak and faint so it is difficult to interpret."

If further tests on Sharon were to detect a more robust response, scientists say the next step would be to investigate ways to make communication easier.

One possibility being explored in some vegetative state patients who show an ability to control brain processes is the use of electroencephalography (EEG) caps, which attach electrodes to the scalp and record electrical brain activity.

Research published in 2011 showed that scientists using these devices were able to communicate with people who had been considered to be in a vegetative state for more than a year.

Because the caps are mobile, they allow communication to be more frequent, since putting a patient into an fMRI scanner every time doctors want to ask a question is invasive, disruptive and expensive.

"If you can put an EEG cap on somebody's head, and the computer is trained to recognize different brain states, that's like having a language," Monti said. "You could then imagine we could proceed from there."

GARDENDALE, AL (WAFF)- The Board of Trustees of Gardendale-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church is expected to meet Tuesday to discuss whether to fire a pastor charged with murder.

Dr. Terry Greer is currently suspended.

If he's fired, he won't have medical insurance.

His attorney said he's going to fight for Greer to keep his job until there's a verdict in the trial.

Police say Greer shot and killed his wife, then shot his daughter before stabbing himself.

92% Silver Linings Playbook

All Critics (213) | Top Critics (50) | Fresh (188) | Rotten (16)

It's a rom-com that succeeds in revitalizing that discredited genre where so many others have failed, injecting it with the grit and emotion of realist drama rather than with amped-up whimsy or social satire or montages of people walking on the beach.

Silver Linings Playbook tells us that happily-ever-after may depend on finding people who coexist with our lunacy, not ones who can lead us out of it. In any case, it's crazy good.

A crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn.

An edgy romantic dramedy that suits our anxious times.

This meaningful film keeps the laughs, giddy anxiousness and warm butterflies from the trailer and sustains it all through two full hours of a love story.

David O. Russell's latest buzz film straddles a fine line between farce and kitchen-sink drama before settling into a groove that gets under one's skin.

It starts to fray about halfway through as it shifts into a more conventional mode, taking on the usual trappings of the genre and making its way to a predictable resolution

Both charming and gritty... Cooper is edgy, while Lawrence is dynamite

If there's one reason why you should see this film, it's to admire the wonderful performances from Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

Cooper and Lawrence Shine in Linings.

Facebook launches Ask Our Chief Privacy Officer, says knowing is half the battle

Facebook launches Ask Our Chief Privacy Officer, hopes to clear the air

There's no denying that Facebook's voting system for privacy policies is flawed -- when halting any measure requires enough votes to populate a large country, the attempt at democracy is more of a token gesture. As proposed, the company has launched an Ask Our Chief Privacy Officer page that's a tad more engaging. Fill out a short form and CPO Erin Egan just might offer a direct answer as to why Facebook chose a given privacy path, and possibly tackle any outstanding concerns head-on. Those curious users whose questions are picked will have to wait for a monthly public response to get their answers, so don't consider the page a personal hotline. It might, however, help make better sense of a company whose attitude towards our information is in constant flux.

Dodgers secure $7B TV rights deal with TW Cable

(AP) ? The Los Angeles Dodgers formally announced a deal with Time Warner Cable on Monday to create a new TV channel that people familiar with the situation say assures the team more than $7 billion over 25 years. That is double what Major League Baseball thought the local TV rights were worth when the team was sold out of bankruptcy just last year.

The gap will be the subject of discussions over the next few months as the league attempts to haggle over how much of that extra money will go into a revenue-sharing pool to help out baseball's poorer franchises.

MLB typically collects 34 percent of a team's local revenue after subtracting costs. When the Dodgers were mired in bankruptcy last year, the league agreed to value the potential TV rights of any future deal at $84 million the first year, rising 4 percent every year thereafter. Over 25 years, that estimated TV rights revenue of $3.5 billion.

The actual TV rights contract represents a huge mark-up from that initial forecast. It could be a boon to the league, depending on how much of that revenue its internal rules committee says is subject to sharing. The contract is also a big win for the owners, including Guggenheim Partners and Magic Johnson, who bought the team out of bankruptcy last year for $2 billion from Frank McCourt.

The broad strokes of the deal terms were confirmed by three people who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about them publicly.

MLB spokesman Pat Courtney wouldn't comment on the deal, but said the league would need to approve it. "We are still awaiting further information," he said.

If approved, fans in the Los Angeles area and Hawaii would have to switch from watching Dodgers games on Fox Sports' regional sports channel Prime Ticket after the 2013 season.

The high price tag also means monthly TV bills are likely headed upward ? in the Los Angeles market and elsewhere.

"There's no question that there's a huge problem with sports rights," said Derek Baine, a senior analyst with research firm SNL Kagan, adding that one big question is "when is this going to stop?" Baine also blamed higher TV bills on the proliferation of new channels and higher fees for once-free TV station broadcasts.

Time Warner Cable Inc., which agreed to pay the fees, is now aiming to cut deals with other local TV distributors to offset the cost, which could spread any fee hikes across the TV landscape, including in other markets.

The new channel, SportsNet LA, will be launched and operated by a subsidiary of the team formed in December called American Media Productions LLC.

Along with selling the channel to other TV distributors, Time Warner Cable will have the exclusive advertising rights and certain branding and programming rights. It will also offer production and technical services outside of regular game coverage, which will be handled by the team's subsidiary.

Ownership of the network was important, according to the people familiar with the situation, because the league allows teams to reduce their revenue-sharing contributions by the cost of running their own TV networks.

The contract marks the second major sports rights deal in three years for Time Warner Cable, which bought the rights to Los Angeles Lakers games in 2011 and launched regional sports networks covering them last year.

After paying an estimated $3 billion for the Lakers rights for 20 years, Time Warner Cable eked out higher fees from other TV distributors in Los Angeles, including DirecTV. The cable operator has said it is bidding for long-term sports carriage agreements to give itself certainty about rising sports costs.

"This deal, like our Lakers' deal, furthers our efforts to attain greater certainty and control over local and regional sports programming costs," David Rone, president of Time Warner Cable Sports, said in a statement.

However, Time Warner Cable is not the only network operator looking to recoup the cost of sports rights by hiking fees on other TV distributors.

The New York Yankees' YES Network, which is part owned by News Corp.'s Fox network, is also expected to seek a fee hike from Time Warner Cable when that agreement expires early next year.

Dodgers owner Mark Walter said in a statement, "we concluded last year that the best way to give our fans what they want ? more content and more Dodger baseball ? was to launch our own network."

CAIRO (AP) ? A curfew was to begin Monday after Egypt's president declared a state of emergency in three Suez Canal provinces hit hardest by a weekend wave of unrest that left more than 50 dead and plunged the nation further into turmoil.

President Mohammed Morsi's declaration was reminiscent of the tactics used by the country's ousted regime to get a grip on discontent. This time, the anger is fueled by his Islamist policies and the slow pace of change.

Angry and almost screaming, Morsi vowed in a televised address on Sunday night that he would not hesitate to take even more action to stem the latest eruption of violence across much of the country. But at the same time, he sought to reassure Egyptians that his latest moves would not take the country back into authoritarianism.

"There is no going back on freedom, democracy and the supremacy of the law," he said.

The worst violence this weekend was in the Mediterranean coastal city of Port Said, where seven people were killed on Sunday, pushing the toll for two days of clashes to at least 44. The unrest was sparked on Saturday by a court conviction and death sentence for 21 defendants involved in a mass soccer riot in the city's main stadium on Feb. 1, 2012 that left 74 dead.

Most of those sentenced to death were local soccer fans from Port Said, deepening a sense of persecution that Port Said's residents have felt since the stadium disaster, the worst soccer violence ever in Egypt.

At least another 11 died on Friday elsewhere in the country during rallies marking the second anniversary of the anti-Mubarak uprising. Protesters used the occasion to renounce Morsi and his Islamic fundamentalist group, the Muslim Brotherhood, which emerged as the country's most dominant political force after Mubarak's ouster.

The curfew and state of emergency, both in force for 30 days, affect the provinces of Port Said, Ismailiya and Suez. The curfew takes effect Monday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. every day.

Morsi, in office since June, also invited the nation's political forces to a dialogue starting Monday to resolve the country's latest crisis. A statement issued later by his office said that among those invited were the country's top reform leader, Nobel peace Laureate Mohammed ElBaradei, former Arab League chief Amr Moussa and Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist politician who finished third in last year's presidential race.

The three are leaders of the National Salvation Front, an umbrella for the main opposition parties.

Khaled Dawoud, the Front's spokesman, said Morsi's invitation was meaningless unless he clearly states what is on the agenda. That, he added, must include amending a disputed constitution hurriedly drafted by the president's Islamist allies and rejected by the opposition.

He also faulted the president for not acknowledging his political responsibility for the latest bout of political violence.

"It is all too little too late," Dawoud told The Associated Press.

In many ways, Morsi's decree and his call for a dialogue betrayed his despair in the face of wave after wave of political unrest, violence and man-made disasters that, at times, made the country look like it was about to come unglued.

A relative unknown until his Muslim Brotherhood nominated him to run for president last year, Morsi is widely criticized for having offered no vision for the country's future after nearly 30 years of dictatorship under Mubarak and no coherent policy to tackle seemingly endless problems, from a free falling economy and deeply entrenched social injustices to surging crime and chaos on the streets.

Reform of the judiciary and the police, hated under the old regime for brutality, are also key demands of Morsi's critics.

Morsi did not say what he plans to do to stem the violence in other parts of the country outside those three provinces, but he did say he had instructed the police to deal "firmly and forcefully" with individuals attacking state institutions, using firearms to "terrorize" citizens or blocking roads and railway lines.

There were also clashes Sunday in Cairo and several cities in the Nile Delta region, including the industrial city of Mahallah.

Egypt's current crisis is the second to hit the country since November, when Morsi issued decrees, since rescinded, that gave him nearly unlimited powers and placed him above any oversight, including by the judiciary.

The latest eruption of political violence has deepened the malaise as Morsi struggles to get a grip on enormous social and economic problems and the increasingly dangerous fault lines that divide this nation of 85 million.

In an ominous sign, a one-time jihadist group on Sunday blamed the secular opposition for the violence and threatened to set up vigilante militias to defend the government it supports. Tareq el-Zomr of the once-jihadist Gamaa Islamiya, said that if the authorities fail to achieve security, "it will be the right of the Egyptian people ... to set up popular committees to protect private and public property and counter the aggression on innocent citizens."

In Port Said on Sunday, tens of thousands of mourners poured into the streets for a mass funeral for most of the 37 people who died on Saturday. They chanted slogans against Morsi.

"We are now dead against Morsi," said Port Said activist Amira Alfy. "We will not rest now until he goes and we will not take part in the next parliamentary elections. Port Said has risen and will not allow even a semblance of normalcy to come back," she said.

The violence flared only a month after a prolonged crisis ? punctuated by deadly violence ? over the new constitution. Ten died in that round of unrest and hundreds were injured.

In Port Said, mourners chanted "There is no God but Allah," and "Morsi is God's enemy" as the funeral procession made its way through the city after prayers for the dead at the city's Mariam Mosque. Women clad in black led the chants, which were quickly picked up by the rest of the mourners.

There were no police or army troops in sight. But the funeral procession briefly halted after gunfire rang out. Security officials said it came from several mourners who opened fire at the Police Club next to the cemetery. Activists, however, said the gunfire first came from inside the army club, which is also close to the cemetery. Some of the mourners returned fire, which drew more shots as well as tear gas, according to witnesses. They, together with the officials, spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation in the city on the Mediterranean at the northern tip of the Suez Canal.

A total of 630 people were injured, some of them with gunshot wounds, said Abdel-Rahman Farag, director of the city's hospitals.

Also Sunday, army troops backed by armored vehicles staked out positions at key government facilities to protect state interests and try to restore order.

There was also a funeral in Cairo for two policemen killed in the Port Said violence a day earlier. Several policemen grieving for their colleagues heckled Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, who is in charge of the force, when he arrived for their funeral, according to witnesses.

The angry officers screamed at the minister that he was only at the funeral for the TV cameras ? a highly unusual show of dissent in Egypt, where the police force maintains military-like discipline.

Ibrahim hurriedly left and the funeral proceeded without him, a sign that the prestige of the state and its top executives were diminishing.

In Cairo, clashes broke out for the fourth straight day on Sunday, with protesters and police outside two landmark, Nile-side hotels near central Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising. Police fired tear gas while protesters pelted them with rocks.

2 rescued after small plane crash on Hudson River

YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) ? Two people were rescued Sunday when their single-engine plane crashed and sank into the icy Hudson River off Yonkers, authorities said.

The small plane was carrying a man and a woman on a sightseeing trip, and crashed about 5:20 p.m., Yonkers Police Lt. Phil Collins said. The two were wearing life vests and were able to get out of the plane before it sank, Collins said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

The couple were plucked from the waters within 30 minutes of the crash and taken to Jacobi Medical Center. They were treated for hypothermia and were listed in stable condition at Jacobi, Lt. Toni Scherer of Empress Ambulance Service said. The names of the two were not immediately released.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen described the plane as a Piper PA-32. Bergen said the pilot told local authorities the flight left from the Trenton-Robbinsville Airport in Robbinsville, N.J. It was flying under visual flight rules and not receiving air traffic control services, she said.

The Journal News reported that Yonkers police officers and a retired detective took a boat out to rescue the two.

"Thank God we got there quick enough," said Daniel Higgins Sr., an off-duty police officer who piloted the boat and whose 12-year-old son was aboard and helped in the rescue effort.

"It's what we do for a living, and I'm just glad we were in the right place at the right time," Higgins told the News.

The plane was registered to Dominick Lipariti, of Manalapan, N.J., according to FAA records. A man who answered the telephone at Lipariti's home told The Associated Press that it was his son's plane and that it had been sold to someone else. He declined to identify the buyer.

In 2009, Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger safely landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in New York after striking a flock of geese. All 155 people aboard survived.

(AP) ? Police on Saturday arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer and critically wounding two sheriff's deputies after allegedly setting fire to a mobile home in south Louisiana, where an elderly man's body was found.

A Chitimacha tribal officer was pronounced dead at the scene of the shootings in Charenton, while two St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputies were critically wounded and taken to local hospitals, said Louisiana State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons.

Hammons said the officers were responding to a report of an armed man walking down a road near the Cypress Bayou Casino when Wilbert Thibodeaux, 48, of Charenton allegedly shot them.

"Thibodeaux fired at the Chitimacha Officer, fatally wounding him," state police said in a news release. "As two St. Mary Deputies, who were in the same car, arrived at the scene Thibodeaux fired multiple shots hitting the deputies. During the encounter, Thibodeaux was shot."

Investigators found the burned remains of a man after extinguishing a fire at a mobile home that Thibodeaux is suspected of setting before the officers confronted him, Hammons said.

Police identified the deceased man in the mobile home as Eddie Lyons, 78, of Charenton. "Detectives suspect Lyons was shot by Thibodeaux before the fire," state police said in a news release.

Thibodeaux was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound that wasn't considered life-threatening and released, according to Hammons, who said investigators were questioning him Saturday evening. Charges against him are pending.

The state Fire Marshal's office is investigating the fire.

"Today is a difficult day for our partners in St. Mary Parish," Col. Mike Edmonson, the State Police superintendent, said in a statement. "My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies and the officer's families tonight. I know the coming days and weeks will be difficult ones for the men and women of the Chitimacha Police Department and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office. We will assist their agencies in any way we can during these trying times."

The casino is run by the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana and is less than a quarter-mile from the scene of the shootings. Hammons said the shootings occurred near but not on tribal land.

"Everybody is just in shock. It's small-town America," said Jacqueline Junca, the tribe's secretary and treasurer.

Police didn't immediately release the names of the officers. Authorities said they will do so at a Monday news conference.

Tribe councilman Toby Darden said the slain officer was married and had two grown children, but he declined to give his name.

"He's a real great guy. Extremely dedicated to his job. Very brave," Darden said.

He was one of seven full-time officers who patrol a 260-acre reservation that has roughly 150 homes, a grocery store, a small school and government offices.

"Everybody knows the officers personally," Darden said. "It's devastating."

Junca said the tribe has around 1,200 members, roughly half of whom live on the reservation.

Access to and from the casino was restricted for roughly 90 minutes as a precautionary measure while police responded to the shooting, said casino spokeswoman Nancy Herrington. Charenton is located about 45 miles southeast of Lafayette.

"We are very much in business and have been," Herrington said later Saturday. "We have events tonight. All of those are taking place."

A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office and a tribal police dispatcher referred questions about the shootings to the State Police.

"We've got a lot of unanswered questions," State Police Capt. Doug Cain said.

One of the injured deputies was taken to a hospital in New Orleans and the other was taken to a Lafayette hospital. Both were listed in critical but stable condition Saturday evening, Hammons said.

Platelet Rich Plasma - Fitness & Weight Loss Tips

National Pain Institute , the leading pain clinics in South Florida , are now offering cutting edge platelet rich plasma therapy. Termed PRP for short, the injections offer pain relief by helping to repair injured tissue rather than simply masking pain.

Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) January 02, 2013

Platelet rich plamsa calls in an individual?s stem cells to regenerate the damaged tissue. For more information and scheduling, call (561) 600-1046.

PRP has become state of the art for pain management West Palm Beach and all of Palm Beach County as regenerative medicine becomes mainstream. Most treatments currently have been successful at helping with pain by masking it, rather than actually correcting the problem. While these treatments, such as cortisone shots, are excellent at short term pain relief, they are not actually correcting the damaged tissue.

Platelet rich plasma consists of blood from the patient that is ?spun down? into a concentrate of platelets and growth factors that have the possibility to repair damaged ligaments, tendons and cartilage. PRP actually calls in the patient?s own stem cells as well which help in tissue repair as well.

To date, PRP injections have shown satisfactory results in preliminary studies, including a study by Sampson et al from a 2008 Current Review Musculoskeletal Medicine study. The PRP therapy was shown to produce good results for tendinitis of the elbow, hip, shoulder, knee, and ankle. Along with the soft tissue benefits, arthritis is also showing satisfactory results.

The Board Certified pain doctors at NPI offer platelet rich plasma injections as an outpatient treatment. NPI has a location in Delray Beach along with a Port St. Lucie pain management clinic. National Pain also has three locations around Orlando, a clinic in New Port Richey, and near Ocala as well.

More information and scheduling is available at (561) 600-1046.

You want to produce a comprehensive opt-in ezine that provides persuasive information that subsequently results in income from the best customer base if you are a web business. When an ezine founder pushes? The principal reason for an electric newspaper (ezine) is always to market a product or service. OKAY, there, Ive said it. You want visitors to come to your website to see what you have or even to account the method at advertisers if you are an Internet publisher. If you?re an online business you desire to produce a comprehensive opt-in ezine that gift suggestions convincing data that in turn results in revenue from an educated client base. When an ezine manager presses too hard or explores procedures that are significantly less than dependable the result is a standing of being fully a spammer. One of the first questions any web business should ask themselves is Why should I develop a business ezine? You may want to rethink your answer you want to provide it a whirl and if the answer is merely because its a tool. Building an ezine can be labor-intensive correlate with a distinct purpose. You need to know what the intent of the ezine is likely to be before you can definitely get things rolling. You?ll probably find it better acquired among your opt-in number if you can form a plan for your ezine. Business owners could mistakenly believe that they ought to create an ezine for marketing purposes and only send whatever data moves them at any given moment. You?ll likely find consumers that opt-in will opt-out in short order if that is your method. It is equally important to respect the value of the time your client-base might spend with your ezine since you comprehend the value of time. The more planning and point to the ezine the higher it?ll be obtained. Look at it in this manner, if you have 1,000 motivated customers on a list that has 5,000 and each individual spends 5 minutes reading the material you send, the accumulated time your customers spend with your ezine is simply over 83 hours or around 3 (24 hour) times. If you send a regular ezine your customers will be likely found by you spending almost half of the season reading your material. To put that in perspective your young ones won?t take school as long as it requires determined clients to collectively read your material. You can do at least ensure it is worth reading if your customers will spend that much time reading your ezine. Film review: Good action, pokey plot in 'Parker' | The Salt Lake Tribune

This film publicity image released by FilmDistrict shows Jason Statham, left, and Jennifer Lopez in a scene from "Parker." (AP Photo/FilmDistrict, Jack English)

"Parker" delivers what you?d expect when you have Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez on a poster ? he kicks butt, she shakes hers ? but it?s a depressingly static exercise.

Statham plays Parker, the literary creation of the late Donald E. Westlake (under his alter ego Richard Stark), a tough thief with a code that emphasizes no killing of innocent bystanders and no double-crosses. Both happen after a heist at the Ohio State Fair, when his colleagues? mistakes kill a fairgoer and their greed leads them to shoot Parker and leave him for dead.

?

HH

?Parker?

Opens Friday, Jan. 25, at theaters everywhere; rated R for strong violence, language throughout and brief sexual content/nudity; 118 minutes.

He recovers and tracks his former crew to West Palm Beach, Fla., where they are planning a massive diamond heist. Parker wants to pinch the jewels from the thieves while also killing them. He enlists a struggling real-estate agent, Leslie Rodgers (that?s J-Lo), who rationalizes his plan by saying "everybody steals from somebody."

Director Taylor Hackford ("Ray," "An Officer and a Gentleman") provides some glossy images of south Florida excess, but John J. McLaughlin?s script slows the pacing with extraneous characters and a muddled plot.

Statham again proves he?s fine putting the hurt on baddies, but flounders during the movie?s faltering attempts at romance and drama.

Pet-Crazy Vermont Is Going To The Cats | The Vermont Standard

Local Barnard cats Tilly and BB. (Pattie Webster Photo)

Local Barnard cats Tilly and BB. (Pattie Webster Photo)

By Virginia Dean,?Special To The Standard

Gato (Sp.), katze (Ger.), chat (Fr.), miu (Egyptian), chatool (Heb.), puccha (Sanskrit), kots (Russian), cath (Welsh) ? no matter what they?re called in what part of the world, cats have had a long, symbiotic relationship with humans ? 8,000 years, in fact, according to some historians.

Today, in the 21st century, Vermont leads this country in cat ownership with almost 50 percent of households owning at least one, according to recent research by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

?I?m not surprised at all,? said Dr. Lynn Martin, veterinarian at the Country Animal Hospital in Bethel. ?When I?m at veterinary conferences, cats are taking over dogs as being the most numerous pets because people are more mobile, live in apartments and find that cats are easier to take care of.? You can travel with them or leave them behind with someone like a neighbor coming in to take care of them.?

The 2012 statistics are based on the U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook which recently revealed that Vermont also ranks first for pet ownership with 71 percent of households owning a pet.? Seven years ago, the last time the AVMA published the Sourcebook, Vermont also ranked first with 75 percent of households owning a pet. (Click here to see photos of local cats.)

?America has discovered the cat,? said Martin who has two marmalade cats of her own.? ?They?re captivating Americans. Everybody at our vet conferences is remarking on this phenomenon.?

At Gillingham?s, for example, local patrons should not surprised to see a tiger feline sitting on the counter or wandering through the aisles as they are making their selections or checking out.

?We have two female tigers that were rescued from Hurricane Katrina,? said Cindy Sands, mail order manager and store buyer. ?They were feral, brought to Vermont and fostered, and then we adopted them. They were small kittens when they came to us.?

?Ava is our brown tiger and entertains people,? Sands said.

Prior to the store?s current cats were siblings Henry and Frannie, Sands said. Henry was 16 when he died in October 1997.? Frannie died in 2001. Their ashes are in a box and are still contained in the store, Sands said.

?The cats are here because we wanted to replace Henry and Frannie,? Sands said.? ?We had so many people coming in looking for them that we decided to get more.?

The current rate of cat adoption at the Lucy MacKenzie Human Society in Windsor leads Animal Care Technician Danielle Buffa to be unruffled with the recent statistics reflecting feline popularity in this state.

?It doesn?t surprise me,? said Buffa.? ?We?ve had a lot of adoptions here lately, especially older cats.? Dogs are high maintenance and have a lot of energy whereas cats are quieter and more mellow.? Their personalities are already set which is great particularly for elderly individuals.? The current trend is awesome.? I?m so happy to see them going to good homes.?

At the Upper Valley Humane Society in Enfield, N.H., Executive Director Deborah Turcott related that, with what she calls ?the conscientious nature of Vermont residents.?

?Compared to dogs, cats are more independent both from a care and personality perspective,? Turcott said.

Turcott said that, similar to Lucy MacKenzie, the UVHS has scheduled more adoptions within the last couple of years.

?We see more and more people who, because of lifestyle and circumstances, will look for a cat,? Turcott said. ?In fact, overall, we have seen an increase in 2011 from 397 to in 2012, 581 adoptions, with cats representing 65-75 percent in a given month.?

Aside from the ease with which cats can be cared for and their adaptability to small or even commercial living spaces, local Vermonters simply enjoy their independence and mystique.

?They?re personable yet aloof at the same time,? said Barnard resident Jean Robert Ashley who owns two Maine coon cats. ?They talk to you, they have quick responses.? Having them is easy and convenient, and they require low maintenance.? They?re so loveable and precious.?

Meg Carlton, owner of Tiger Tail Lodge LLC in Enfield, N.H., agreed.

?They have their own sense of self,? said Carlton who has a clientele of more than 200 individuals who use her facility for boarding.?? ?Dogs often are in constant need of attention and when people are gone all day, they feel guilty.? You don?t experience that with cats.? They can take care of themselves.?

Perhaps the quintessential example of this self-sufficiency is reflected in the barn cat, a hearty breed that by its very nature feeds off the structure?s inherent vermin and remains liberated from the conventional domestic and often indoor member of its own species.

?We have four of them,? said stable hand and veterinary technician Anne Marie at the Kedron Valley Stables in South Woodstock. ?We have a huge hayloft that they climb up and down and sleep in.? They definitely keep the rodent population down, maybe not 100 percent, but we don?t see the numbers of mice and rats that we would if they weren?t there.?

Cody Palmer of the Doton Farm in Barnard said their barn cats follow a daily routine as a result of her introducing her two female domestic short hairs to the barn when they were only a few weeks old.

?They?re good mousers and ratters,? Palmer said.? ?As soon as they hear the milk machines go off and we stop milking, they?ll come running.?

Palmer, similar to many others, grew up with cats and so has another young feline in her own house who tends to be on the impish and comical side.

?She?s strictly a house cat,? Palmer said.? ?She snuggles with me in my bed, waits at the door and is there when I get home from work.? She follows me around and even plays with our dog.? At times, she even acts like a dog.? She?ll get up on the table ? even though she?s not supposed to ? and will even go into the shower to explore after I get out.?

Barnard Town Constable Wes Hennig also comes from a long heritage of living with the furry felines.

?I?ve always had a cat since I was a little kid,? said Hennig who has a shy, long-haired stub tail female cat.? ?They?re great creatures.? They?re smart and a lot of fun to watch.? Sometimes they do some crazy stuff.? You don?t have to take care of them as you would a dog but you do worry about them as much.?

Brenda Garsh, also of Barnard, concurred.

?If we go somewhere, we just need someone to come in,? said Garsh who owns a 9-year-old cat that one day suddenly appeared around her house and eventually was taken in by Garsh and her family.? ?They?re extremely independent.?

Aside from being easy to look after, transport and contain, cats are also inexpensive to feed, according to Cathy Peters, veterinarian technician and co-owner of Runamuck LLC in Woodstock who owns four Siamese, the youngest being a year-and-a-half and the oldest, 12 years.

?I love them because they?re like dogs,? Peters laughed.? ?They talk a lot and at times can be kind of naughty.? They stay like kittens longer, too.? When I?m downstairs cooking or doing chores, I can hear them zooming back and forth upstairs having fun.?

Another reason cats might be so popular, Peters added, is because of their longevity.

?Indoor cats usually live a nice long life which I speculate is another reason why people love having them,? said Peters.? ?They?re friendly and don?t require a lot of maintenance.?

Part of the reason for their long life, aside from living indoors instead of outside, Martin explained, is due to their upsurge in popularity over the last couple of decades.

?As cats have risen in status, so have the research dollars,? Martin said.? ?There is more money available for vaccinations, medical issues, and treating diseases as well as basic nutrition.? The whole industry that supports pet products is seeing that there is money to be made which, in turn, only benefits the cat.?

[Video] The Green Media Way: Grow Visibility & Leads Using Audio ...

video-player-screenshot

Has it really been over (2) months since I gave this talk at the San Francisco and Los Angeles Green Festivals? ?I guess so, because the calendar doesn?t lie?

In today?s post, I am happy to share with you a brand spankin? new version of The Green Media Way: Grow Visibility & Leads Using Audio + Video, a talk I was lucky enough to share with attendees at the 2012 SF + LA Green Festivals this past November while exhibiting as a Media Partner for the events with AudioAcrobat. ?Thank you to so many of you for coming out and hearing/seeing it given live, and for those of you who?ve been waiting for a replay, it?s finally here!

This new video can be seen by clicking the player/image above or by visiting this direct link, and focuses on how using Audio + Video in the cloud to grow visibility and leads for your product or service can be much greener than previous offline methods.

In this video, viewers will learn several important facts about growing visibility and leads through the use of Audio + Video in the cloud, without being bored to death (I promise), including:

  • Who can benefit from using Audio + Video in the cloud
  • What LMFAO are doing in my presentation
  • Where?to begin broadcasting your online Audio + Video
  • When is the best time to publish your Audio + Video content
  • Why Audio + Video on the web is GREEN, and
  • How?to target demographics with your Audio + Video

Feel like reading words on a screen instead of rotting your brain with moving images? ?If so, I?ve made the transcript of the video available for those of you who consider yourselves, as Bill Hicks would say, ?readers?, right here:

Welcome to The Green Media Way: Grow Visibility and Leads Using Audio and Video!

When was the last time you watched a YouTube video? Was it earlier today? Yesterday? Last weekend?

Did you know, that if you were to watch YouTube for three days straight, you would be consuming the same amount of energy as it takes to manufacture, package and ship a single DVD? True story. That research comes directly from the Google Blog at GoogleBlog.Blogspot.com

In today?s presentation we?ll be touching on many important facets of using audio and video to grow visibility and leads, such as:

*Creating High Quality Audio and Video Content by first identifying your audience and then structuring your message to target your audience.

*Branding your audio and video content through incorporating brand awareness techniques and exciting newcomers about your brand.

*Broadcasting audio and video content on the Web through personal sites and blogs, in your email and newsletter campaigns and on your favorite social networks.

*Generating leads from audio and video content by cultivating organic discussion and nurturing the online relationships which sprout up along the way.

*We?ll also cover why audio and video in the cloud means green along with how your own personal experiences with using audio and video can be made as green as possible.

Let?s talk a bit about creating high quality audio and video content. Identifying your audience is quite possibly the most crucial component of creating your content. Without identifying a target audience, your message may not reach its intended destination, or even worse, it may convey a different message than originally intended, which could easily mislead listeners or viewers.

How does one identify their target audience? We like to begin by asking the following questions:

What are you selling?

Is it clear what your product or service does?

What is the idea or message you wish to communicate?

?and most importantly, who is the buyer?

Remember, the goal is to effectively communicate with your audience and their peers. This may require a bit of research within the specific demographic or demographics you wish to reach.

The next step in creating high quality audio and video content is to structure your message to target your audience. Tailoring your message for each individual demographic you wish to reach is the absolute best way to reach your audience.?

If you have a single demographic, this may be a very easy step. If you have many demographics you?re intending to reach, this will require a bit more customization.

A great example of a campaign reaching out to dozens of different demographics comes to us in the form of Motown legend Barry Gordy?s Son and Grandson, better known as popular music group LMFAO and their debut single ?I?m In Miami Trick?, which was released in 2008 with over 50 different versions created for individual cities, festivals and countries. To accomplish this amazing feat, they recorded the name of the city, festival etc. and replaced the word ?Miami? in the chorus with the specific demographic they were intending to reach. Needless to say, this level of customization garnered them massive amounts of radio play, concert tours and aided in their rise to international stardom shortly thereafter.

When thinking about branding your audio or video we?ll always want to put ourselves in the place of our listeners or viewers by making sure that the brand resonates with our audience during each and every step of the process.

Because brand recognition affects listeners and viewers on a subconscious level, the best branding will always be instantly recognizable through combinations of audible tones, colors, fonts and shapes.

There are several easy ways to consistently reinforce your brand within audio and video content, such as:

Creating custom audio and video players or themes which represent your brand. Inserting your logo or brand imagery either within or near your audio or video and including custom branded short links leading back to your site. A really great service for this last step is bit.ly b-i-t-dot-l-y.

Remember, the majority of sales are made when buyers are excited about a brand.

How does one excite newcomers about their brand? Start by connecting with them on a personal level. These personal relationships are most likely to occur between peers, when your audience is laughing or through expert testimonials. Running contests and offering free gifts are also great ways to enroll and excite newcomers about your brand.

When broadcasting your audio or video, taking advantage of your current web traffic is the easiest way to begin. Placing dynamic, brand-reinforced audio and video to a website, blog or landing page is an essential first step in connecting with your current web traffic. Make sure to place audio and video players above the fold to ensure maximum visibility. If your audience has to scroll or click around to locate your audio or video, you?re guaranteed to lose a percentage of potential plays.?

It?s also important to note that placing audio or video on the home page of your website which plays automatically is a big deterrent. Doing so will turn many visitors away and can cause embarrassment or potentially bigger issues if your visitors are in public or at work. Instead, allow your visitors to make the decision to press play for themselves, on their own terms.

Next, bring your message to your audience. No one visits every website on a consistent basis. If you have a new audio or video to share with your audience, make sure to include links to listen or download when sending out your next email or newsletter mailing.

Social networks are another great place to have your message heard by people from all around the world. Each network is different, and so should be your method of delivery. The best way to ensure that people click through to play your content is to include written prompts in your update to watch and listen.

Here?s a really great example of a video I recently shared on my Facebook timeline. Notice how there is a direct prompt urging my friends and subscribers to watch the video? Also, if people don?t see an image or player on Facebook, they?re a lot less likely to watch or listen. Make sure your message is tailored for each specific network form maximum engagement and speaks to the specific media type.

When thinking about how to generate leads from audio and video content, we must first turn our attention to cultivating an organic discussion with those who are consuming our content. In order for your audience to engage with your content, there must be an easily accessible, familiar way to do so.

Begin on your Website or Blog by enabling comments for discussion and including social media sharing tools. Take it a step further by letting your audience share their voice by using personalized reply or testimonial lines. Through the latter of these options, you can easily let your audience hear the excitement in both your own and others voices.

Remember, as each new audio or video comes to life, make sure to engage with your friends, fans and followers by sharing your content on the social networks you?re currently active within, and make sure to ask for feedback.

After cultivating organic discussion the next step is to nurture the online relationships which sprout up along the way. The number one thing you can do to engage with your audience is to be a good listener. Do not push your own agenda first. Do follow-up when someone comments, shares your links or retweets you. It is important to respond in a timely manner and thank them for spreading the love. Always remember to return the favor when possible.

A good policy is to lead by example. Connect with your audience via their platforms and they will be infinitely more likely to do the same for you and your business. If this were a college class, it would be titled, ?How to Get More Followers 101?

A great example of this is to follow twitter users who follow you. Like facebook fan pages which have liked yours. Help out in promoting events and causes which you believe in. A little interaction goes a long way!

Does audio and video in the cloud mean green? Absolutely.

In all fairness, there has been much discussion as to whether or not cloud computing is actually greener than user-side processing, mostly due to the fact that many large companies, Google, we?re looking your direction, hadn?t yet released vital energy consumption statistics. This is changing quickly and to put restless minds at ease, here?s an extremely insightful quote on the subject:

?To provide you with Google products for a month ? not just search, but Google+, GMail, YouTube and everything else we have to offer ? our servers use less energy per user than a light left on for three hours.?

That comes to us from Urs Hoelzle, Senior VP, Technical Infrastructure at Google

When thinking about how using audio and video in the cloud compares to earlier forms of networking and marketing of a product or service, the real advantages come to light. Here are some very simple, yet important points to consider:

Time. Less time spent equals less resources used.

Paper. Creating online information products reduces the amount of snail mail or loose literature being thrown away and saves countless other resources.

Energy. Work online from home or wherever you may be to reduce your daily impact on the environment.

In today?s presentation we?ve touched on many important facets of using audio and video to grow visibility and leads, such as:

*Creating High Quality Audio and Video Content by first identifying one?s audience and then structuring your message to target that audience.

*Branding audio and video content through incorporating brand awareness techniques and exciting newcomers about your brand.

*We also covered why audio and video in the cloud means green along with how your own personal experiences with using audio and video can be made as green as possible.

We understand that there may still be a lot of unanswered questions at this point, and we?d like to briefly cover a few that we are often asked after giving this presentation, such as:

Q: Why would I choose to investigate a paid audio/video service when there are so many free services available?

A: First of all, question everything. The old adage that there?s no such thing as a free lunch came about for a reason. While the main benefit of using a free service is to maintain a low budget, you may be surprised by what you?re really giving up in trade for using a service for free.

Many free services inject advertising. Free services will also display your competition prominently next to or immediately after serving up your content, while paid services are more professional and offer more robust branding opportunities and feature sets.

Q: Should I wait to create my video until I can afford the costs associated with professional production quality?

A: Absolutely not! As more and more video is created and shared online, consumers consistently reinforce the fact that they are more likely to engage with their peers much faster than with over-produced videos from large corporations.

A prime example of this is YouTube star Jenna Marbles, who started with a $0 budget and scored a massive 5.3 million views within a single week of posting her video ?How to Trick People Into Thinking You?re Good Looking?. Since its release, this video alone has over 28 million views. Her YouTube channel now has over 4.6 million subscribers and has received over 821 million views in total, making it the 4th most popular channel on YouTube, ever. Jenna Marbles is now a professional speaker and is estimated to be making a 6-figure income?all because she chose not to wait and to simply get her content out there for people to see.

Q: One final question we?ll leave you with is, What?s the difference between On-Demand streaming and Live streaming?

A: Live streaming requires your audience to be available at the exact moment you are streaming. If your audience isn?t available, they?ve missed the opportunity to connect with you and your content. Also, many live feeds aren?t yet easily accessible on mobile devices, which now outnumber the global population.

On-demand streaming is similar to Netflix. It?s what you want, when you want it. If your audience is busy, they can consume your content when they have the time to do so, whether it be morning, noon or night.
