Independent Education (IE) is an association of 80 independent, private schools educating 31,000 students from nursery school through Grade 12 located in the greater Washington, D.C. region. It includes schools in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and one school in Pennsylvania. IE is a small, non-profit organization committed to fostering high professional standards and sound educational practices at and among its member schools through innovative leadership and professional development programs for boards of trustees, heads of schools, administrators, and teachers. ?IE is the leading advocate for independent education in the region, working with media, government, educational and community individuals and groups to sustain and strengthen independent education in the Washington, D.C. area.

Director of Communications

?

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Communications directs and is responsible for planning, executing, delivering, evaluating, and following up on all forms of communications (oral, written, electronic, social media) to the IE membership. The Director of Communications leads all marketing, messaging, and branding efforts and initiatives for the association. In addition, the Director of Communications manages field intelligence gathering efforts to develop and share innovative and compelling stories about IE programs and services as well as stories about IE member schools.

Key responsibilities include:

?

Website and Communications

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a communication plan for IE and IE membership, putting in place a plan that creates awareness, enthusiasm, and momentum regarding the IE brand, IE membership, and IE programs and services.
  • Work with the Executive Director to develop and implement IE?s emerging value proposition to IE membership.
  • Write content for IE e-newsletter, exercise editorial and content control over the IE website and all IE communication. Maintain and update current content on the IE website.
  • Oversee writing and editing of all IE communications, ensuring the highest quality in style.
  • Monitor the IE website on an ongoing basis to ensure high quality.
  • Build and implement IE?s social media strategy. Manage, leverage, and grow IE?s online social media presence through platforms including twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
  • Manage website and social media analytics tools and the ability to tweak website and social media strategies and accounts based on findings.
  • Lead and manage blogging opportunities for IE staff and membership.
  • Fully participate in planning and budgeting activities related to communications and member relations.
  • Manage all media contacts.

Member Relations

  • Build, implement, and maintain a strategic plan for strong and interactive relations with IE membership.
  • Direct marketing of IE programs, services, and initiatives to IE membership that demonstrate benefits, features, value, and return on investment, including the IE Career Center and Purchasing Point.
  • Lead knowledge dissemination, reporting, and communications about IE programs and services as well as stories about IE member schools.
  • Serve as the staff liaison and support to the IE DC Legislative Oversight, Montgomery County Legislative Oversight, and Vision Committee.
  • Support the Executive Director and Director of Operations with membership growth initiatives.
  • Support the Senior Director of Professional Development & Strategic Initiatives in providing informed perspective on trends and needs from IE members for future programs.
  • Track and measure the level of engagement of IE membership with IE programs, products, and services.
  • Oversee annual school compliance with accreditation and IE Principles of Good Practice.

Professional Development

  • With the Senior Director of Professional Development and Strategic Initiatives, coordinate member communications related to professional development events and programs in an effective, useful, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Create program invitations as needed.

Corporate & Preferred Sponsors

  • Work with the Executive Director to manage and cultivate existing relationships with corporate and preferred sponsors to secure and expand recurring non-dues revenue streams.
