NFL may look into expanding postseason overtime rule to regular season

The NFL's Competition Committee is looking into the possibility of implementing the same overtime rule for the regular season that it uses for the postseason, the New York Times is reporting.

The NFL went to its new overtime rule two seasons ago. Each team gets at least one possession unless the team receiving the kickoff scores a touchdown.

Two games went to overtime in 2011. Denver beat Pittsburgh 29-23 on an 80-yard scoring pass from Tim Tebow to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime. The New York Giants beat San Francisco 20-17 on a field goal on their second overtime possession.

There were no overtime playoff games in 2010.

One NFL executive told the newspaper that there was a good chance the overtime rule would be applied to the regular season. The newspaper reports the executive 'could not think of another rule that was different in the regular season and the postseason.'
