Family remembers explosion victims

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - One of the families that suffered the most during Saturday's explosion is turning their pain into triumph. Turns out, Dion and Jennifer Longworth loved gardening.

In their memory, the Longworth family wants to plant a neighborhood garden in the spot where the couple?s home once stood.

?Anytime you would go to his house he would force you to look at his garden,? said Brookley Longworth, adding her brother was proud of the garden in the backyard of his home.

The Longworth?s lived in one of the homes that was leveled in the Southside explosion. John Longworth says investigators told him the home neighboring his son?s house exploded. The impact from that explosion knocked the Longworth home off its foundation, causing it to cave in. The couple was found in their bedroom.

Meanwhile, investigators haven?t told 24-Hour News 8 where the explosion originated.

Soon after the explosion, uncertainty unfolded on Facebook.

Dion's sister, Emily Voss, posted a still image of the burning neighborhood on her Facebook page. Her caption said ?This is where Dion's house is. They (are) the only ones not accounted for. I'm scared. We've prayed."

Unfortunately, the Longworth?s fear became reality.

?I was in denial,? Emily Voss said.? I just kept thinking they were out of town at a Reds game.?

Voss said she called her brother and his wife repeatedly but they never answered.

So, she and her sister Brookely went to Mary Bryan Elementary School to see if Dion and Jennifer were there.

Reunions happened all around Voss and her sister but her brother and his wife never surfaced.

?At the end, we were the only ones there and I knew,? Voss said.

Instinct told her first but Voss said a call from the coroner confirmed what she feared.

?He would always give me a hug for no reason,? Voss said.

Brookely Longworth says remember to tell your loved ones, ?You love them because you never know.?

John Longworth says Emily spent Saturday preparing lesson plans for the upcoming week. When they visited her classroom Sunday night, they discovered a birthday card she made for her students.

John Longworth says he was proud of his son and his wife of 11 years.

?She was the kind of teacher you would want your child to have,? John Longworth said. ?She was so dedicated and cared about her kids.?

Funeral arrangements are still pending.
