The Kentucky Derby Festival has become a major economic development event for Louisville.

In addition to bringing together more than 1.5 million spectators ? including about 200,000 visitors ? the festival brings in millions of dollars in sponsorships and has an economic impact of nearly $130 million, according to a study of the 2011 event.

The largest economic impact for a single KDF event in 2011 was Thunder Over Louisville, which produced an estimated impact of $56.6 million for the Louisville-area economy, as Business First reported in January. The Pegasus Parade had the second highest impact, at $22.4 million.

According to Patrick Armstrong, senior vice president of marketing and development, the Derby Festival could not put on its more than 70 events in about three weeks without major corporate contributors.

About 50 percent of the festival?s $6 million budget for 2012 came from sponsors, he said. The festival annually draws in-kind and financial contributions ranging from hundreds of dollars to six-figure deals for title sponsorships, Armstrong said.

About 22 percent of the budget comes from sales of pins and other merchandise.
