Mustang Hills earns all-state baseball accolades

Former East Lincoln High School standout baseball player Parker Hills has earned yet another honor.

On Aug. 4, Hills was named to the N.C. Baseball Coaches Association 2A All-State team.

Hills, a catcher/pitcher, has signed a National Letter of Intent with Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., and he won numerous individual honors before graduating from East Lincoln in June.

This past spring, he was named the South Piedmont 1A/2A conference?s player of the year for the second consecutive season. He also was an all-state selection following his junior campaign.

Off the field, Hills was a member of the National Honor Society and a North Carolina Academic Scholar.

East Lincoln holds hoops camps

East Lincoln High School will host a youth basketball camp Monday, Aug. 8 to Thursday, Aug. 11.

The school?s Back to School Co-Ed Camp is for second- through eighth-graders and will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The camp costs $80 if attendees are pre-registered and $90 for those who do same-day signups. Families with two children enrolled in the camp receive a $10 discount.

Copperheads announce tryouts

The Lake Norman Copperheads? 18- and 16-under showcase baseball teams? tryouts are approaching quickly.

On Aug. 14 at 5 p.m. at North Lincoln High, players in grades 9 through 12 can try out for one of the teams.

Area nonprofit dragon boating team seeks new participants

Organized Chaos, a local nonprofit devoted to the promotion of dragon boating, is seeking new members.

The team, which practices at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius, will compete in a race at Lake Lure on Aug. 27, a race in Gainesville, Fla., on Sept. 10, and another in Johnson City, Tenn., on Sept. 17.

Dragon boating, a sport in which 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steers person race across a body of water against other boats, has festivals in North America, Asia, Australia and Europe.

Organized Chaos practices on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. New recruits may attend three free practices before committing to being a member. Dues are $100 per year.

Softball camp for girls

The Carolina Comets will host their annual softball clinic at Lake Norman High School Monday, Aug. 8 through Friday, Aug. 12. The clinic was rescheduled from the previous week because the Carolina Comets Teal team won the ASA state tournament and played in the ASA national tournament this week.

The camp will be from 8 a.m. to noon daily for rising first- through fifth-graders and 1 to 5 p.m. daily for rising sixth- through 10th-graders. Rising 11th- and 12th-graders are welcome.

Copperheads bounced from SCBL playoffs

The Lake Norman Copperheads lost 8-4 to the Pineville Pioneers and were eliminated in the second round of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League playoffs on July 27.

Lake Norman, the reigning league champion, had a nine-game winning streak snapped. The Copperheads finished with a 29-14 record. Pineville went on to win the championship by sweeping Morganton, 9-4 and 7-2, in the best-of-three finals.

Ten Lake Norman players were picked for the SCBL All-Star Game: Kasceim Graham, Brett Armour, Mark Rhine, Aaron Spano, Austin Blake, Nolan Gaige, Liam O?Sullivan, Ryan Mas, David Lee and Jerry Skeens.
