Asus pulling back on Windows RT

Asus has revealed that it is not planning on launching any more tablets running Windows RT.

?

The company stressed that it hasn?t dumped Windows RT, but that for the foreseeable future it will focus on Windows 8 devices.

Speaking with AllThingsD, Asus chairman Jonney Shih said that he wasn?t very impressed with the customer response to the operating system.

He blamed RT?s inability to run older Windows applications as one of the main reasons for poor hardware sales.

Shih pointed to the failure of Microsoft?s own Surface tablet and Asus? own VivoTab RT as indicators that the problem lies with the software.

However, Shih isn?t just displeased with Windows RT; he also isn?t over the moon about Windows 8.

According to Shih, one of the biggest mistakes Microsoft made with the operating system was the decision to remove the Start Button. He noted that one of the most popular apps on the Windows app store is one that brings back the class Start Button.

Microsoft is itself bringing back the Start button in its next update to Windows 8, due to be released later this year.

Despite the criticism of its software, Asus isn?t giving up on Microsoft. Shih pointed to its recent Transformer Book Trio, which runs both Windows and Android.

He also revealed that the company is evaluating building smaller ten-inch and eight-inch Windows tablets.

With Apple reportedly concerned about the iPad mini cannibalising sales of its larger iPad, you would think Shih would believe the eight-inch tablet would have more success.

However, when asked which he believes the company will build, he replied: ?My personal opinion is the 10-inch may make more sense?.
