Insurance companies in China reaped around 1.43 trillion yuan ($226 billion) in premium amounts last year, a statement said.

The total premium was up 10.4 percent year-on-year, Xinhua reported citing data from the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC).

However, despite the steady growth, the insurance industry was still facing deep-rooted problems that needed to be addressed quickly, said CIRC chairman Xiang Junbo.

The CIRC said assets of the country's insurance companies totalled 5.9 trillion yuan ($935 billion) at the end of last year, compared to five trillion yuan in 2010.
