The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) works to make sure the UK has secure, clean, affordable energy supplies and promotes international action to mitigate climate change. Heating is a crucial element of our overall energy use in the UK, and the challenge of finding ways to decarbonise this heat is huge: over 80 per cent of heating used in UK homes, businesses and industry is produced by burning fossil fuels, and over a third of the UK?s carbon emissions come from the energy used to produce heat.

The Government's recent policy paper, ?The Future of Heating: Meeting the Challenge? sets out a plan to cut emissions from heat across the UK economy and focuses on key actions to drive the move to low carbon heating alternatives. These include a ?9million package to help local authorities get low carbon heat network schemes up and running and ?1million to help the cities of Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield and Nottingham develop heat networks.

This is a unique, challenging and high profile role within DECC; setting up and leading the innovative new Heat Networks Delivery Unit, which will support local authorities and Local Economic Partnerships to deliver heat network projects (also known as district heating) to commercialisation. You will already have senior level commercial experience within a demanding infrastructure sector. Goal driven, with the energy, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit to take projects forward, you will be able to communicate commercial and technical information to senior local authority officials, stakeholders and Ministers, and build a strong team to support you.
